With his Ayreon project, legendary multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and vocalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen single-handedly revived the rock opera genre in the 1990s. Since then, Ayreon has achieved worldwide critical acclaim and success with albums charting in various countries. Seventh Ayreon output, 01011001, finds Lucassen both exploring new musical frontiers and revisiting his roots. Story Through technological advancement, Forever, race of aquatic beings living on Planet Y, has found the secret of longevity. They have advanced to the point that they have become completely dependent on machines and are losing their emotions. Passing comets on collision course with Planet Earth provides an opportunity to revitalize their race; forever harness comets to carry their DNA to a new home on Earth. When comet and Earth collide, cataclysmic impact exterminates dinosaurs, but from the ashes of destruction, humans arise. At first, experiment with seeded DNA seemed successful: humans forever vicariously relive emotions they experienced before the age of machines. In order to help mankind overcome their physical ailments and mental limitations, forever speed up human evolution. But the result is tragic: people develop similar technological dependency with their emotions waning just like Forever and moral development not keeping pace with their capacity to invent. Forever must find way to save mankind from its imminent self-destruction or should they?

Reception

01011001 is the seventh studio album by Arjen Anthony Lucassen's long-running Ayreon project. 01011001 is a binary representation of the ASCII value of letter Y. AllMusic reviewer Cosmo Lee praised the album, saying that it has pristine production byzantine songs that feel like full albums. He goes on to say that music this over top almost defies criticism. Reviewing it is like reviewing the world's tallest building. It doesn't care; it just goes on and on. Exclaim's Laura Wiebe Taylor felt that the album had some great songs, such as Liquid Eternity and e = mc 2, but that some of other songs were weaker, including newborn Race and web of Lies. She concludes her review by saying that ultimately, 01011001 is a hard rock extravaganza. Chad Bower, in his review for about. Com, say that 01011001 has something for everyone, and that album is a musical tour de force that takes listeners on a musical journey with interesting storyline and very well-write songs. Record Collector' s Tim Jones notes differing styles of the album's songs, saying that Truth is in Here is similar to the music of Blackmore's Night, that river of Time is reminiscent of Jethro Tull, and that beneath Waves reminds him of Pink Floyd.

AllMusic Review by Cosmo Lee

With Ayreon, Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen has built career around massive prog metal opuses with hordes of guest vocalists. Basically, anybody in metal who can hold a tune has to sing for Ayreon at some point. 01011001 features Anneke Van Giersbergen, Jonas Renkse, Floor Jansen, Tom Englund, Hansi Kursch, Simone Simons, Ty Tabor, and Daniel Gildenlow, among many others. These singers are focal points of their bands, but in Ayreon, they're merely characters in Lucassen's rock operas. 01011001 is a sprawling two-disc set that one critic call longest CD ever make. Indeed, album spans 100 minutes, and feels like 100 years. It's perfect fit for the Inside / Out label-pristine production, byzantine songs that feel like full albums, hi-tech synths that wish they were guitars. Lucassen really, really likes his synths; in waking Dreams, he entirely forgoes bass in favor of percolating ostinato that suggests beefier Kraftwerk. Electronics also pervade percussion; beneath Waves is as if Alan Parsons covering the Beastie Boys ' so what'cha Want. Ray gun synths, operatic vocals, fake and real strings, and even Celtic melodies adorn this sonic mansion. Its ambition would be laughable if the record didn't actually fulfill it often. Admittedly, such fulfillment was purchased at Guitar Center; record is most touching when it strips down to acoustic guitar on the gorgeously compact web of Lies. These two discs, subtitled Planet Y and Earth, are about humanity's disconnect with itself and the destruction of the planet. But that's really not important. Music this over top almost defies criticism. Reviewing it is like reviewing the world's tallest building. It doesn't care; it just goes on and on.

Plot Edit

You have enter cranial vistas of psychogenesis. This is a place of no-time and no-space. Do not be afraid. Ayreon is a series of sci-fi / Fantasy Rock Opera albums by Dutch musician Arjen Anthony Lucassen. The music is mainly a combination of folk-influenced Progressive Rock and Progressive Metal, but many other genres are represent. A key element of Ayreon's sound is the use of many guest musicians and vocalists-01011001, for example, has 17 singers, including Lucassen himself. Although each album has its own concept or plot, stories are all connect, if in sometimes strange ways. Because of the Mind Screw nature of the series, it's hard to describe the plot without giving away major spoilers for different albums. After minor Hype Backlash to 01011001, Arjen decided to stop making Ayreon albums, releasing Lose in New Real, with him as only lead vocalist, in 2012. Come 2013, however, he revive Ayreon with a fresh set of vocalists and a more instrument-orient direction in Theory of Everything. Four years later, Source was release, coming back to both guitar-heavy sound and Forever storyline where album serves as their backstory. Arjen has teased new direction with Transitus, romance dealing with death in a more Gothic Metal direction than previous albums. The album, together with a tie-in comic book by Felix Vega, is set for release in September 2020.
