Last November, BBC Radio 6 DJ Gilles Peterson released mix that Kieran Hebden had done for station back in 1999. It was same year that then-young producer had released his debut album Dialogue under moniker Four Tet, and set was quick to reveal him as quirky experimental producer whose approach builds on sound of his post-rock high-School band Fridge. This high school, it turned out, was Elliott School in Putney, visual and performing arts that counts members of Hot Chip, xx, and William Bevan of Burial as alumni. Which brings us to 0181, collection of producer's unreleased works from those early years-starting from 1997 through material made around time of his second full-length, Pause, in 2001-that Hebden issued to SoundCloud for free last week. 0181 as whole serves as reminder of cyclic nature of this kind of instrumental production. Creating electronic music of future involves sifting through past to re-discover sound. 0181 brings to mind this sort of time-shift not because sounds within are regressive, but rather because despite their 12-16 years of being hide away, they feel surprisingly fresh. Make public as one long 38-minute track, 0181 has flow of wide-ranging showcase of Hebden's early production flair. Unconnected in any real way beyond sequencing are hush melodic interludes, moments of ambient static, jazzy constructions, and naked bones of early 2-step. At times, it can be frustrating simply because abrupt of some minute-long tracks leave us wanting MORE. First Thing We Hear Is Glimmering Shower Of Piano Keys That Recall Some Of Hebden's Lush Recent Work, Like Like Pink's Jupiters, But Then This Sound Dies Out And We're Then Launched Into Scattered 2-step Percussion. Twenty-eight-or-so minutes in you'll find folky, syncopate guitar plugs that serve as reminder of why Four Tet was branded with briefly fashionable term folktronica. Jazz-inflected tracks that foreshadow Hebden's later collaborative projects with percussionist Steve Reid are where 0181 stretches farthest and has most room to develop, and these tracks sound most fix in time. But even these moments pass quickly: around 20 in, lazy tune grooves along at hands of dreamy, smoky horn melody and drum-kit, and it lasts all of three minutes. In unearthing and presenting his earlier work Now, Hebden accidentally that consistency is his strongest asset. His 15 years of music can easily be viewed through lens of this scattered set, and it strikes same chords now as it did then, in terms of both construction and feelings. All along, he's been building nuanced landscapes brimming with exploration.
