Len Barry, lead singer of Dovells on their danceable early-1960s hits Bristol Stomp and You Cant Sit Down and later solo artist whose career peaked with his infectious love song 1-23, died on Nov. 5 in hospital in Philadelphia. He was 78. His son, Spencer Borisoff, said the cause was myelodysplasia, bone marrow disease. Dovells were a doo-wop group whose members had all sung lead at various times. When the group auditioned for Cameo-Parkway Records in Philadelphia in late 1960, Mr. Barry sing lead on No, No, No, song he had write. They get a deal, and his strong, soulful voice secures his role with the group. Lenny had a great voice, Jerry Gross, one of Dovells, said in a phone interview. He had the sound they want. The back cover of the group's first album, Bristol Stomp, features brief biographies of each singer. Mr. Barrys say, his hobbies include rock roll, basketball and, naturally, girls. After several modest hits, Dovells returned to the Top 10 in 1963 with the infectious You Cant Sit Down, which peaked at No. 3. Later that year, Mr. Barry left the group in a dispute over its direction. He wanted Dovells to move further into rhythm and blues, Mr. Gross say, but others want to become nightclub act. Lenny came over and he say: I free. I want to be a solo artist, John Madara, producer and songwriter, said in an interview in 2014 on online series Tom TV. Mr. Madara and his partner, David White, original member of the group Danny and Juniors, began producing songs for Mr. Barry At Decca Records, including At Hop 65 and Lip Sync. 1-23 written by Mr. Madara and Mr. White, with lyrics in bridge contributed by Mr. Barry, rise to No. 2 on the Billboard chart in 1965. Mr. Barry never had a bigger hit. Mr. Madara said he had idea for 1-23, but Mr. Barry said he did He told the Albany Herald in 2012 that he had been inspired by the Marvelettes song Beachwood 4-5789, and by his interracial relationship with one of the group members, to which her family object. The song was really about interracial relations that were as easy as 1-23, he say. While in high school, he also sang with the doo-wop group, Brooktones, some of whose members were later in Dovells. He would continue to perform with Dovells and on his own through the early 1970s, but only occasionally afterward. Mr. Barry was a reluctant performer who disliked being onstage. He also disliked being called blue-eyed soul singer, term he considered an insult. He boisterously objects to the term, Mr. Borisoff said of his father. He felt it was racist, like people were saying, Oh, for white guys that good soul.
