Vezina joined the Montreal Canadiens in the fall of 1910, and he would spend his entire professional career with the team. The Canadiens were part of the National Hockey Association until 1917, when the League fold. They then joined the NHL in 1917. Before the 1926-27 season, Stanley Cup was played by team that won the NHA / NHL, against whichever team won the Pacific Coast Hockey Association and / or Western Canada Hockey League. After Vezina made his debut with the Canadiens on December 31 1910, he played in 328 straight games, plus an additional 39 playoffs, for 15 seasons until he was forced to leave game because of illness. During the course of his career, Canadiens won two NHA League championships, three NHL League championships, and two Stanley Cups. Vezina's debut with the Canadiens was inauspicious: he lost his first game. Though the Canadiens were not a great team for his first few seasons, in the 1910-11 season, Vezina's goals against average led the five-team NHA. He repeated feat in the 1911-12 season, when there were only four teams in the League, and Montreal was at the bottom of the standings. Vezina scored his first shutout during the 1912-13 season. By this time, Vezina had acquired his nickname, Chicoutimi Cucumber. On ice, he was known for his gentlemanly play, and his steadiness in goal. Though Vezina did not get excited, he was still very competitive. Because goalies were forced to stand in goal until at least 1919when rules were changed because of Clint Benedict, who began dropping to his knees and sitting on ice to make savesVezina's, accomplishments in terms of low goals against average even more remarkable. Some believe Vezina was better with his stick than his glove. This was emphasized by his ability to clear the puck, which resulted in few rebounds. Of fact, Vezina also had a reputation, not indulging in smoking or drink. He also does not speak much English.

Post-season

On March 10, Wanderers and Canadiens play for the Montreal City Hockey championship. Wanderers would win 10-2, despite an outstanding display by Georges Vezina. Ottawa intend to hold a benefit game for Bruce Ridpath, who has been injured in an automobile accident, intending to play a team composed of All-stars from other NHA teams. After changing dates several times, All-Star benefit game was set for March 16. The All-Star team would have Art Ross, Ernie Russell and Gordon Roberts of the Wanderers; Paddy Moran, Joe Malone and Joe Hall of Quebec; Didier Pitre, Jack Laviolette and Ernie Dubeau of the Canadiens. Additionally, Cyclone Tayler had permission to play. However, two days before the event was to occur, NHA president Emmett Quinn, while in New York city, booked the Wanderers and Canadiens for an exhibition game in Boston, and Ottawa was unable to make alternate arrangements, cancelling NHA benefit. Ottawa New Edinburghs, champions of the Amateur Inter-Provincial Amateur Hockey Union, hold their own benefit for Ridpath on March 23 against other IPAHU players. Future professional stars Clint Benedict, Harry Broadbent and Eddie Gerard played for Ottawa, which raised 300 for Ridpath, while Cyclone Taylor was the referee. All four NHA teams play exhibition series in New York and Boston from March 16-March 23. Group of players, dubbed 'Art Ross All-Stars' played three games against the PCHA All-Star team in British Columbia from April 2-April 6, losing two out of three games, 4-10 2-8 6-5. Hughie Lehman, Frank Patrick, Ernie Johnson, Newsy Lalonde, Tom Dunderdale, Run McDonald and Harry Hyland play for the Western stars, and Paddy Moran, Art Ross, Hamby Shore, Skene Ronan, Joe Malone, Odie Cleghorn and Jack McDonald play for the East with Cyclone Taylor substituting for Malone.
