1 Corinthians 12:26 Context

And whether one member suffers pain; even meanest, lowest, and most distant, as foot or hand, toe or finger: all members suffer with it; are more or less affected therewith, and bear part of distress; as is easily discern, by their different forms and motions on such occasion: so when anyone member of mystical body is in affliction, whether inward or outward, of body or mind, rest are, or should be, affect with it, condole, sympathize, help, and assist; and remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them, as if they themselves were in bonds, and them that suffer adversity, whether spiritual or temporal, as being in body, not only in flesh, but as being part of body, church; and therefore should weep with them that weep, and bear part with them in their sorrows. Jews have saying F6, that if one brother die, all brethren grieve; and if one of society dies, whole society grieves; ' and also another F7, that everyone that afflicts himself, with congregations, is worthy to see or enjoy the comfort of congregation or church; ' or one member be honour; by being set in highest place, and employ to greatest usefulness, or by being most richly and beautifully clothe and adorn: all members rejoice with it; as sharing in honour, or benefit of it: so if one member of church of Christ is honour with high office, with great gifts, with large measure of grace, spiritual light, knowledge, and experience, with great discoveries of love of God, with presence of Christ, and communion of Holy Ghost, or with good things of this life, and heart to make use of them for interest of religion, other members rejoice at it; for so it become saints to rejoice with them that rejoice, and be glad, both at temporal and spiritual prosperity of each other: and upon whole it is clear, that meanest have no reason to be discourage, nor highest and greatest to be proud and elate. Translations

Chapter 12 variety OF USE OF SPIRITUAL GIFTS are show. In the human body, every member has its place and USE. This applies to the Church OF Christ. And there is something more excellent than SPIRITUAL GIFTS. Verses 1-11 SPIRITUAL GIFTS were extraordinary powers bestowed in the first ages, to convince unbelievers, and to spread the gospel. GIFTS and graces greatly differ. Both were freely give OF GOD. But where grace is give, it is for the salvation of those who have it. GIFTS are for the advantage and salvation of others; and there may be great GIFTS where there is no grace. Extraordinary GIFTS OF HOLY Spirit were chiefly exercised in public assemblies, where Corinthians seem to have made displays OF them, wanting the Spirit OF piety, and OF Christian love. While heathens, they had not been influenced by the Spirit of Christ. No man can call Christ Lord, with believing dependence upon Him, unless that faith is worked by a HOLY Ghost. No man could believe with His heart, or prove by miracle, that Jesus was Christ, unless by HOLY Ghost. There are various GIFTS, and various offices to perform, but all proceed from one GOD, one Lord, one Spirit; that is, from Father, Son, and HOLY Ghost, origin OF all SPIRITUAL blessings. No man has them merely for himself. The more he profits others, more will they turn to his own account. The GIFTS mentioned appear to mean exact understanding, and uttering doctrines of Christian religion; knowledge of mysteries, and skill at giving advice and counsel. Also gift OF healing sick, working OF miracles, and to explain Scripture by peculiar gift OF Spirit, and ability to speak and interpret languages. If we have any knowledge OF truth, or any POWER to make it know, we must give all the glory OF GOD. The greater GIFTS are, more the possessor is exposed to temptations, and the larger is the measure of grace need to keep him humble and SPIRITUAL; and he will meet with more painful experiences and humbling dispensations. We have little cause to glory in any GIFTS bestowed on us, or to despise those who have them not. Verses 12-26 Christ and His Church form one body, as Head and members. Christians become members OF this body by baptism. Outward rite is OF Divine institution; it is sign OF NEW birth, and is called therefore washing OF regeneration,. But it is by Spirit, only by renewing OF HOLY Ghost, that we are made members of Christ's body. And by communion with Christ at Lord's Supper, we are strengthen, not by drinking wine, but by drinking into one Spirit. Each member has its own form, place, and USE. Meanest makes part OF the body. There must be a distinction OF members in the body. So Christ's members have different powers and different places.
