2: 16 desire for flesh-OF pleasure OF OUTWARD senses, whether OF taste, smell, or touch. Desire OF eye-OF pleasures OF imagination, TO which the eye chiefly IS subservient; OF that internal sense whereby WE relish whatever IS grand, new, or beautiful. Pride OF life-ALL that pomp in clothes, houses, furniture, equipment, manner OF living, which generally procure honour from the bulk of mankind, and SO gratify pride and vanity. It therefore directly includes desire OF praise, AND, remotely, covetousness. ALL these desires are not from GOD, but from the prince OF this WORLD. People's Bible Notes FOR 1 John 2: 16 1Jo 2: 16 FOR ALL that in WORLD. This sinful WORLD IS comprehended under three heads. Lust OF flesh. Desires which spring from appetites and passions. Lust OF eyes. Desires that are aroused by appeals make TO OUR eyes. Pride OF life. Vain glory OF WORLD; its foolish display. Sensuality, avarice and pride, nearly but not quite, illustrate what IS mean.

Coffman's Commentaries on the Bible

For all that is in the world, lust of flesh and lust of eyes and the vainglory of life, is not of Father, but is of the world. For all that is in the world. Is not of Father. This has the effect of explaining what John meant by his use of the world in 1 John 2: 15. It is that aspect of it which is not in the Father. It is therefore incorrect to accept the world in these verses as meaning God's glorious natural creation, described by Father Himself as good. Jesus said the world loves its own; Paul say, be not conform to this world; and John declared that, whole world lieth in evil One. In light of these and many other passages in the New Testament, it is clear that John was here speaking of that phase of the world of people which is antagonistic to God. Lust of flesh. Lust of eyes. Vainglory of life. For ages, students of New Testament have SEE in these triad suggestions of triple temptation of Eve: fruit was good to eat. Beautiful to SEE. And would make one as God, knowing good and evil; and likewise triple temptation of Christ: He was hungry. Satan shows Him all the kingdoms of the world. Such an exhibition of Jesus' power as that of leaping from the parapet of temple unharmed would have been a vainglorious triumph. From such comparisons, things mentioned by John in this verse have come to be called three avenues of temptation. Sins in view have been variously classify: sensuality, materialism, ostentation; voluptus, avaritia, superbia; appetites of body. Desire to possess material things. Egotism, etc. A number of scholars are reluctant to allow any correspondence of this passage with temptations of Eve and of Christ is intend; but David Smith does not hesitate to affirm that, Here is a summary of all possible sins, as exemplified in temptations of Eve, and of our Lord. Lust of flesh. All temptations which have their roots in appetites and needs of the body are included in this; but appetites of the body are not in themselves sinful. Therefore, flesh is used here in an ethical sense, meaning the old nature of man, or his capacity to do that which is displeasing to God. Lust of eyes. Eyes have been called the gateway to the soul, hence the point of entry for many temptations. 'tin John's day, impure and brutal spectacles of theater and arena would have supplied abundant illustrations of these. It is no less true of our own times. Pride of life. The central lust of ego itself is indicated by this.
