Ladies and gentlemen, you can go mad on the road. That is precisely what this film is all about.-Voice, probably Frank Zappa's, in 200 Motels We have been hearing for a long time that videotape is going to revolutionize filmmaking, and now here is the vanguard of revolution. Whatever else it may be, Frank Zappa's 200 Motels is a joyous, fanatic, slightly weird experiment in use of the color videotape process. If there is more that can be done with videotape, I do not want to be there when they do it. The movie is a kind of magical mystery trip through all motels, concert halls, cities, states and groupies of road tour Of Mothers Of Invention. No attempt is made at documentary accuracy. All of the cities are lumped together into Centerville, real nice place to raise your kids and the sanity of the film can be gauged by the fact that Ringo Starr plays Frank Zappa as a very large Dwarf. Zappa's mixture of mediums-rock, electronic music, Royal Philharmonic, dance, overlapping visuals-pushes videotape process almost to its extremes. Zappa's kind of mixture isn't new. But mixing it on film is new. Videotape reportedly allows Zappa to film an entire movie in about a week, to do a lot of editing and montage in camera and to use cheap videotape for his final editing before transferring the whole thing to a surprisingly high-quality 35mm image. Because videotape makes it so easy to slosh on more special effects, Zappa wasn't stingy; some people may find the movie's multidimensional feel too overbearing. In way, maybe, overbearing is the word for this movie. It assaults the mind with everything at hand. When there are moments of relative calm-say, during animated sequence, or during rare moments when only one image is on screen, we find ourselves actually catching our mental breath. The movie is so unrelentingly high that you even wish for intermissions. Still, music is there, lot of it, and because the movie doesn't stop for music or anything, we never get the sense that this is an illustrated album. It is also not another record of road tour; It breaks with the tradition of Don't Look Back, Mad Dogs and Englishmen and rock festival movies. It is also not quite in the same family tree as the Beatles movie, but it's in a tree, all right. One with enough branches for everyone but wild tigers snapping at your toes. 200 Motels is not the kind of movie you have to see more than once. It is the kind of movie you can barely see once: not because it's simple, but because it's so complicated that you finally realize you aren't meant to get everything and sort everything out. It is a full wall of sight-and-sound input, and experience of input-not its content, is what Zappa's giving us.

Plot

Less a movie than a purposely crude series of musical vignettes and inside jokes for die-hard fans, Frank Zappa informs viewers in the opening scene that touring can make you crazy, ladies and gentlemen, and that is what 200 Motels is all about. The rest of the plot-less production is filled with more self-reflexive reminders, as close-up eye and tape recorder signal that Zappa is watching everything his bandmembers are doing. Reasonably, Mothers of Invention make up cast, notably Jimmy Carl Black, who repeatedly remarks how he just wanted to quit the band and go play real music, have beer, and get laid The character of Jeff, played by Martin Lickert, was written for bassist Jeff Simmons, who actually quit the band just prior to shooting. Other cast members include real-life groupies appearing in some bizarre nudity sequences, along with Who's drummer Keith Moon as Hot Nun Who overdoses on drugs. Ringo Starr appears as Larry Dwarf and lends some humorous narration, but that does not clarify any of the proceedings. Action is supposedly take place in Centerville, which is really kind of poorly dressed set guarded by soldiers. Scenes are randomly assembled and interspersed with performances, including songs Lonesome Cowboy Burt, Magic Fingers, and Strictly Genteel.

Zappa, who died 23 years ago, was posthumously Award GRAMMY Life Achievement Award in 1997. In his Lifetime he received seven nominations and won GRAMMY for Best Rock Instrumental Composition in 1987 for Jazz From Hell. This nomination is incredibly special to us as it celebrates Frank Zappa as a Classical Composer and was one of the last albums that my mother worked on creatively. 200 Motels was an important project for Gail and real labor of love. Say Ahmet Zappa. It was an amazing night of music-the performances were extraordinary and Maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen was phenomenal. I know Gail so enjoyed working with all of the artists on this wonderful record. We are excited to have release recognize. The 2013 200 Motels Performance by Los Angeles Philharmonic and Master Chorale was a special evening-And some might even say it was predestine. Write and produced by Frank Zappa to accompany his 200 Motels feature film, portions of the score were premiered by Los Angeles Philharmonic with Zubin Mehta conducting in May 1970 at UCLA, before kaleidoscopic film and double LP soundtracks were released in 1971. For the Philharmonic Performance, it was arranged into 90-minute set of suites and featured an enormous group of players, including a 166-member ensemble comprise of a 115-piece orchestra, more than a dozen singer-actors and a 32-member chorus. Of once-in-alifetime Performance, Los Angeles Times write, Esa-Pekka Salonen, who led large LA Phil enhance with Rock musicians and Los Angeles Master Chorale, was cheered like a Rock star. Orchestra looked to be having a ball.
