[October 14, 2020], Due to ongoing winter months weather, the alpine areas of the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park will continue to be closed for the season. Presently, visitors can drive 15. 5 miles of the roadway from the West Entrance to Avalanche Creek. All roadways on the east side of the park continue to be closed due to COVID-19 operating needs. The Going-to-the-Sun Road generally closes between Avalanche Creek and Jackson Glacier Overlook on or before the 3rd Monday in October, relying on roadway and weather condition conditions. Logan Pass rests at an elevation of 6,646 feet. Most site visitor features in the park have closed for the period. One section of Apgar Campground is open for primitive outdoor camping on a first come, first offered basis. Free wintertime backcountry camping permits are available November 1, April 30 and can be reserved three to seven days in advance by e-mail or phone.
