Husband-wife composer / performer duo Priscilla and Barton McLean formed McLean Mix in 1974, employing unusual combination of audience interactive installations or creative playpens through use of technology, virtuosic and evocative concerts and lecture / performances, extensive use of visual media, and specific thematic content drawing from sources such as intriguing experimental techniques, World Music, and sounds of nature. Their versatility is evidence by their extensive touring as full-time artists in virtually all corners of world for past 30 years, after having taught at major universities before that. Although often centering its activity around university and concerts which serve as its mainstay, they are equally at home with alternative spaces and galleries and community arts centers and museums, where they develop specifically-target programs for urban audiences as well as family-oriented events. In 2013 they retire from touring, continuing with select residencies. Since 2015, they have been actively composing with Kyma from Symbolic Sound, results of which are available on YouTube. Barton McLean, composer from Petersburgh, is returning this week to his alma mater, Crane School of Music, part SUNY Potsdam. During six-day residencym McLean's career and legacy will be celebrated in way that every composer likes best with concerts of his music. On Thursday, symphonic band will perform his Rondo, and on Monday, Nov. 21, Crane Ensemble will perform two additional pieces. All three works date from years McLean spent at Crane. It was pivotal time that launched his career. Having grown up in welfare-support family with alcoholic father and heroic mother who kept US together through factory and waitress working, I was given huge boost by New York Regents College scholarship, say McLean. When he earned his bachelor's degree in 1960, McLean was first undergrad at Crane allowed to major in composition. Upon graduation, he joined faculty and taught string bass while simultaneously working on his master's at Eastman School of Music. After that came doctorate at Indiana University and then teaching posts in Midwest and Texas. Since early 1980s, McLean, 78, has been full-time composer focus exclusively on electronic and computer music. That aspect of his career will also be explored coming week at Crane. McLean and his wife, Priscilla, who is also composer and contributes reviews to Times Union, will have sessions with composition majors and also play some of their works. McLean said idea of returning to Crane resulted from email inquiry that arrived about year ago from Brian Doyle, current director of bands at school. Doyle was compiling list of wind pieces that were composed by Crane faculty. One thing led to another, say McLean, and before I knew it, I was invited to spend week in residence. McLean admits he's not heard his band pieces in decades. What's more, one of pieces, his 'Legend No. 2, ' will be its world premiere. Wind Ensemble pieces and subsequent career with electroacoustic music represent two galaxies from one another, say McLean. I don't know what prompted me to migrate one to other. Maybe it was that I find in electronic music vast creative unknown, whereas in acoustic world cream had already been skim, low-hanging fruit pick. That being say, I still stand firmly behind these three early conservative works, and wouldn't change note any of them. Octavo Singers are probably best known in Capital Region for their annual performance of complete messiah. That's coming on Dec. 11 at College Memorial Chapel. But since Curtis Funk took as artistic director in 2011, Octavos have been stepping out in new directions. Emphasis Is Still On Big Works With Chorus, Vocal Soloist And Orchestra. But some of more familiar masterpieces in group's repertoire have been allowed to rest on shelves for while.

Works

Like his mentor, maverick iconoclast Henry Cowell, Barton McLean has travelled whole world of music, expanding his sonic palette and aural imagery while racking up miles. Like his other main teacher, architect and electronic pioneer Iannis Xenakis, McLean respects no boundaries between acoustic and electronic he is at home with piano as with developing new software instruments. With this diverse pedigree, McLean is uniquely qualified to straddle worlds of technology and wilderness. From uncannily precise performance of Petersburgh Electrophilharmonia to field recording of Musician Wren, McLeans ' music integrates large vision of nature into her manner of operation. Album Begins With Concerto: States Of Being, For Piano And Electronic Sounds. It is virtuosic tour de force in which ensemble follow soloist rather than other way arounda, nearly impossible feat in real Concerto world. Stark contrast is constant feature of this album, as next offering, Ritual of Dawn, illustrates. Flutes, clarinet, harp, percussion and piano combine in seamless, evocative world where pulsative rhythmic ideas combine with dynamic outbursts, producing what Debussy might have created had he lived in late 20th century. Demons of Night bring us back to realm of symphonic terror and lead us into McLeans most current concerns. Magic at Xanadu and Ice Canyons represent latest explorations of McLeans venture into MAX / MSP software creation. They are classically balance, mature works generate live in actual performances during his and 2010 tours with his McLean Mix duo. Final Work, Rainforest Images II, Is Described By McLean As His Most Sophisticated Work In Any Genre. Being hybrid of studio composition and live performance with voices, experimental woodwinds, and keyboards used as sources, Rainforest sounds recorded on three continents, all assembled in McLeans studio, Rainforest Images II is all-embracing in its sonic breadth, emotional scope, and performance versatility. And mystical ending is to make one weep, with voices trailing against evocative drone, accompanied by exquisite musician Wren, recorded in Amazon jungle. With Barton McLean as your guide, you will have muddy and heady tour of his elegant soundworlds. This release is part of NEA-fund NYFA Series celebrating work of Composers who have won New York Foundation for Arts fellowships. And they are definitely their own people-even within individualistic field of contemporary art music, they stand out as unique-doing it their own way, in tradition of their Transcendentalist forebears, such as Henry Thoreau, Walt Whitman and Charles Ives. And this mention of Transcendentalist artists connects to another of their interests-they are both passionate environmentalists, and their work is suffuse with their love and concern for threatened natural environment. Ice Canyons is fantasy in which simulation of string orchestra is hear to intensely romantic effect. Rainforest Images II bristles with dripping condensation and birdsong-actual birdsong sample in rainforests of Peru and Australia. It is dense with activity.
