Thus, present RCT will contribute to better understanding of the role of CPI in interface PRESSURE management and, subsequently, prevention and management of PRESSURE ulcers. While this RCT in itself is not likely to be sufficient to inform health system decision making on whether to purchase CPI systems en masse, findings could provide greater understanding of the use of this technology in clinical practice. This study also has potential to increase our understanding of the relation between interface PRESSURE and skin and tissue changes resulting from exposure to prolonged PRESSURE. A much larger trial would be required in subsequent stages to determine the impact of CPI on hard clinical endpoint of overt PRESSURE ulceration, that is, clinical outcome that we are ultimately trying to prevent. The present RCT described here will build significantly on previous research on interface PRESSURE and PRESSURE ulcer development, and it will clarify the role of CPI in modifying interface pressures, important intermediate goal in prevision PRESSURE ulcers.
