Sweet-natured and extremely funny, Huntz Hall made career of playing youthful dopes in Bowery Boys, East Side Kids, and Dead End Kids, beginning in 1935 and lasting through 1950s. Hall was born on August 1920 in New York City as Henry Richard Hall. There were 13 before him! Hall was Irish Catholic whose dad was air-conditioning repairman who obviously loved children. There were more born after Huntz. Halls ' formal education was at Catholic grammar School, which was followed by stint at New Yorks Professional Childrens School, where he learn about drama. In addition, he could sing and perform as boy soprano in Madison Square Quintette Professional group. Hall was discovered by Actor / director Martin Gabel, Best Supporting Actor Tony Award winner for Broadway play Big Fish, Little Fish and also known for TV Whats My Line?. Gabel had Hall audition for one of Tough street Kids in Sidney Kingsleys play Dead End in 1935. Hall was 15. One of other kids was Leo Gorcey, then 18. Play Was Tremendous Success On New York Stage. Subsequently, Hollywood producer Samuel Goldwyn bought play for film production to be directed by William Wyler in 1937. Since there were no kid actors in Hollywood who could match natural New York look and attitude of actors in play, Goldwyn signed all six of plays Kids to contracts. They include Billy Halop, Gabe Dell, Bobby Bernard Punsly, Huntz Hall, and Leo Gorcey. In Hollywood, film was being produced by Samuel Goldwyn Company distributed by United Artists. Film Version Stars Joel McCrea, Sylvia Sydney, And Humphrey Bogart, With Claire Trevor, Marjorie Main, And Wendy Barrie In Significant Supporting Roles. Of course, boys were making their debut as Dead End Kids. Come Academy Awards time, movie was nominated for Best Picture for Best Art Direction. Oscar nominations go to cinematographer Gregg Toland and Claire Trevor for Best Supporting Actress. All accolades for Picture give Dead End Kids spectacular send-off in Hollywood. Warner Bros tried to capitalize on gangs ' popularity by shoving them into some other Pictures of similar genre, such as Angels With Dirty face, Hells Kitchen, Little Tough Guy, and Angels Wash Their face, all in late 1930s. In 1940, was 20 years old. He gets romantically involved with dancer named Elsie May Anderson and they get marry. Their marriage lasted until 1944. While all this was happening, War II was raging. Being patriotic, Hall enlisted in Army to do his duty. There is some discrepancy about how he managed to be in Army and still crank out series of films during War years. Starting in 1946, Hall got together again with Leo Gorcey to make series of Bowery Boys comedies for Monogram Pictures. It was lowest of low studios and cranked out potboilers by dozen.

The Bowery Boys Edit

In 1945, when East Side Kids producer Katzman refused to grant Leo Gorcey's request to double his weekly salary, Gorcey quit series, which then End immediately. Bobby Jordan then meeting with his agent, Jan Grippo. Grippo, Gorcey, and Hall formed Jan Grippo Productions, revamped format, and rechristened series Bowery Boys. Gorcey, who owns 40 percent of company, star, produce, and contributes to scripts. New Series Follows More Established Formula Than Prior Incarnations Of Team, With Gang Usually Hanging Out At Louie's Sweet Shop Until Adventure Comes Along. Original Main Characters Were Terrence Aloysius, Slip Mahoney, Horace Debussy Sach Jones, Bobby, Whitey, And Chuck. Sunshine Sammy Morrison, scruno in East Side Kids films, declines invitation to rejoin gang. When Bobby Jordan quit series for same reason, his character was replaced by Butch Williams, with former East Side kids Bennie Bartlett and Buddy Gorman alternating in role. Proprietor Of Malt Shop Where They Hung Out Was Panicky Louie Dumbrowski. Like previous incarnations of team, members go through number of changes over course of series. Thirteen actors were members of team at one time or another. Bobby Jordan, original Dead End Kid, appears in first eight films, but leaves after being injured in elevator accident. Jordan was also unhappy with direction of series, which favor Gorcey and Hall, and limited participation of other gang members. Gabriel Dell returns in fourth entry, Spook Busters, as Gabe Moreno, former member of gang just out of Navy with French war-bride in tow. He remains for next 16 features. Gabe was convenient utility character, frequently changing jobs to suit story at handand limit casting budget. Dell often acted as bridge between real world and those of boys who he would summon to assist him. He reprised one of his East Side Kids roles in Hard boil Mahoney, playing Gabe as myopic with thick glasses, ascot and cap. His final appearance was in Blues Busters in 1950, generally regarded as one of funniest in series. Early films such as in Fast Company flirt with same humor-lace crime drama of previous series, but they gradually shifted to all-out comedy, growing more slapstick and fantasy-orient over next decade. After 1950, series began to resemble farcical Abbott and Costello comediesa, far cry from grim social realism of their 1930s films. Grittiness Of Old Days Was Sanitized With Gang's Dingy Basement Clubroom Replaced By Louie's Ice Cream Parlor. Boys also adopt more adult look, exchanging their sloppy, juvenile wardrobe for suits. Team Spirit Of Ensemble Cast Faded As Huntz Hall Was Elevated To Co-star Status To Showcase His Comedic Skills.
