Wallflowers strike a fine chord with their second LP, Bringing Down Horse. Songs on the album Were All composed by front man Jakob Dylan and musical arrangements feature an array of acoustic instrumentation-including 6-string acoustic guitar, banjo, dobro and pedal steel-complementing core electric rock timbres and rhythms. In all, this roots Rock sound led to a critical and commercial success as the album went triple platinum and was nominated for multiple Grammy awards. The group was formed in New York in 1988 by Dylan and guitarist Tobi Miller, originally using the name Apples. The group go through several lineup migrations, with keyboardist Rami Jaffee joining in 1990. After the group migrated to Los Angeles and changed their name to Wallflowers. The following year, the group was signed to Virgin Records and released their self-title - debut in 1992. While reviews for the album were mostly positive, sales were slow and soon the group split with Virgin and reverted back to playing LA-area clubs. During this time, Greg Richling became the group's permanent bassist while drummer Peter Yanowitz depart, leaving the group without a full-Time drummer. Still, Wallflowers signed with Interscope Records and began preparing for their second album. After the group sent demos to several producers, T Bone Burnett was impressed and agreed to produce the album. Burnett enlist Matt Chamberlain on drums throughout recording sessions, as well as several other guest musicians and backing vocalists to help enrich the group's sound. Due to the long duration between bands ' first and second albums, songs on Bringing Down Horse were composed over a long span, dating back to the late 1980s. The Album begins with its two biggest commercials and radio hits. One Headlight marches in with a steady, rhythmic thump, accent by alternating licks from Jaffees Hammond B3 organ and lead guitar of guest Jon Brion. Songs title were inspired by bands ' leaner days, when they were able to move on in spite of less than stellar support. Methodical and melodic throughout, this song was an instant Classic in the late nineties and remains so today. 6 Avenue Heartache dates back to the bands ' earliest days and was written by Dylan in 1988 about a homeless man on his street. Musically, Mike Campbell provides perfect lead guitar above the simple, acoustic and bluesy rhythm of the song. Repetitive to be sure, but to great effect as this song never seems to linger too long. Bleeders features bright acoustic and is upbeat but not Over Top. Later, there is an interesting duo organ / guitar lead during short bridge. Three Marlenas is built on three basic strum chords, which set the scene for Dylans folk-like storytelling about basic domestic situations and multiple personalities. Difference was another hit as upbeat, frenzied rocker with distinct guitar riff and good harmonies through pre-choruses, with Richlings bass assuming control during tracks driving choruses.

Background

No one really talked about Wallflowers ' first album. And when they do talk about it, they talk about how Jakob Dylan could never be as good as his dad, so why does he even bother trying? The group's self-titled 1992 debut is filled with songs that rip on and rip up Dylan Sr., As Junior attempts to build his own rep his own way. But things didnt turn out like he plan. Because all people talked about was how Jakob Dylan could never be as good as his dad. So when Wallflowers got around to making a follow-up record four years later, Dylan scrapped all but one of the band's original members, wrote set of songs that lean toward Heartland / classic rock and hired a producer, T Bone Burnett, well-verse in music. And Bringing Down Horse became a hit. It became such a hit that Dylan's pedigree was moot. He even had younger fans asking, who is Bob Dylan? But it all comes down to songs. And Dylan write solid bunch this time around, including One Headlight, 6 Avenue Heartache, Three Marlenas and Difference. He also became a better and more confident singer. Plus, new band know their way around Hammond B3s and other instruments that give songs a rustic worldliness that was nowhere to be found on their debut record. Guests like Tom Petty and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell, Jayhawks Gary Louris and Counting Crows ' Adam Duritz help out. Bringing Down Horse reach No. 4, eventually selling 4 million copies. All but one of its four singles reached Top 40. And One Headlight Top both rock and modern-rock charts. But it didnt last. By the time Wallflowers got around to releasing their third album in 2000, music fans had moved on, and stalled outside of the Top 10. But for a brief moment in the 90s, when almost anything was possible, Dylan Jr. Was more popular than Dylan Sr. And he had hits to prove it.

Personnel

LOS ANGELES, April 27, 2016 / PRNewswire /-With release of Wallflowers' second album, Bringing Down Horse, on Interscope Records, May 21 1996, band leader Jakob Dylan transformed overnight from scion of one of Rock's living legends to presence in his own right. The album go quadruple-platinum, selling more than 4 million copies, and produced four multi-format hits in one Headlight, 6 Avenue Heartache, Three Marlenas and Difference, earning a total of five Grammy nominations and two Grammy Awards over two years. Featuring Jakob Dylan on vocals and rhythm guitar, Michael Ward on lead guitar, Rami Jafee on Hammond B3 organ, backing vocals, keyboards and piano and Greg Richling on bass, Bringing Down Horse, band's first for new label Interscope, represents a major advance over the band's self-titled 1992 debut, which was released on Virgin. The recording, which takes place largely at Sunset Sound in Hollywood, features banjos, dobros and pedal steel guitars and such guest musicians as Jon Brion, Mike Campbell, Matt Chamberlin, Counting Crows' Adam Duritz, Leo LeBlanc, Michael Penn, Sam Phillips, Gary Louris, Stephen Bruton and David Rawlings. Dylan's songs, written over the course of five years, reflect his frustration at trying to succeed on his own terms in the music business. Every song, fortunately, or unfortunately, is about that feeling of defeat and the struggle to overcome that, he said at the time. The Release of Bringing Down Horse changed all that. The Album eventually peaked at 4 on Billboard 200 and Top Heatseekers chart. The first single, 6 Avenue Heartache, go to 8 At Modern Rock Tracks, 10 At Mainstream Rock Tracks, 25 At Top 40 Mainstream, 26 At Adult Top 40 and 33 At Hot 100 Airplay. One Headlight scored triple play, going 1 At Mainstream and Modern Rock Tracks as well as Adult Top 40, 2 At Top 40 Mainstream and a year later, 7 At Hot 100 Recurrent Airplay. Three Marlenas peak at 17 At Modern Rock Tracks and 21 At Mainstream Rock Tracks, while Difference go to 3 At Mainstream Rock Tracks, 5 At Modern Rock Tracks, 14 At Adult Top 40 and 19 At Top 40 Mainstream. Album garner five Grammy nominations and two wins over two years, including Best Rock Performance by Duo or Group With Vocal and Best Rock Song nominations for 6 Avenue Heartache in 1997, followed by two Grammy Awards in the same categories for one Headlight as well as one nomination in the latter for Difference in 1998. The reviews at the time were adulatory. No Depression say: what's consistent throughout is the remarkable quality of songs, and the punch with which performances were capture. Indeed, if every band put out a record this good their second time out, there'd be no need for term'sophomore slump. ' AllMusic rave: music here is assure and contemporary, with just enough of the past showing through to catch one's eye fine effort indeed.

The Wallflowers

Hit songs since 1990: 6 Avenue Heartache, One Headlight, Difference in late 1990s, at a time when seminal American rock acts such as Bruce Springsteen and Tom Petty were largely absent from popular radio, Wallflowers helped keep the classic-rock sound alive with its album Bringing Down Horse. Wallflowers were the brainchild of Jakob Dylan, son of folk-rock luminary Bob Dylan. In 1990, Dylan formed Wallflowers, along with guitarist Tobi Miller, keyboard player Rami Jaffee, bassist Barrie Maguire, and drummer Peter Yanowitz. Wallflowers signed to Virgin Records and released their self-title - debut album in 1992. Albums do not sell well, and Virgin dropped the band from its label. Dylan subsequently reconfigured Wallflowers, retaining only Jaffe, and replacing other members with guitarist Michael Ward, bassist Greg Richling, and drummer Mario Calire. Interscope Records picked up this new version of Wallflowers and released the band's second album Bringing Down Horse in 1996. On Bringing Down Horse, Dylan settles into a comfortable compositional voice. Dylan's songs owe much to his father's evocative and literate style, as well as to his father's spiritual heir, Bruce Springsteen. The band retains its classic-rock feel, with clean, driving guitars and swirling organs to fore, but the new lineup brings excitement and freshness to the music. Wallflowers' new music resounds with listeners. Lead single 6 Avenue Heartache, classic tale of love-go-bad with memorable chorus, establish band on popular radio. The follow-up, One Headlight, was an even bigger hit, reaching the Billboard Top 10. One Headlight, dark, driving tune about the death of a friend, raises eyebrows of some critics, who question Dylan's lyrical chops. But the song's dramatic sound, punctuated by Ward's swirling slide guitar and coupled with its fist-pumping chorus, was undeniable and propelled Wallflowers to stardom. Songs such as One Headlight and its follow-up Difference fill void in contemporary radio. The rock style of Wallflowers had been the dominant sound of popular radio for decades, but it has largely been outmode by grunge and increased use of pop's electronic sounds. Wallflowers pick up rock mantle with Bringing Down Horse and bring sound back to popular radio. Four years pass before Wallflowers release their next album, Breach. Aside from minor hit sleepwalker, album fails to dent pop charts, and critics assail the album as lackluster. Red Letter Days, released in 2002, encounters the same fate. Ward departs prior to the album's release; band fill in with various session guitarists. Whatever its final legacy, Wallflowers' landmark album Bringing Down Horse does much to keep alive traditions of classic rock for the new generation of radio listeners.
