Reception

The character was initially well received by critics. Riley Sky of Dropkick Divas Media gave positive review, saying, as charming and manipulative as Alison DiLaurentis was, we get to see where Ali got those sociopathic qualities in CeCe Drake. CeCe possesses charm eerily similar to Alisons. While Ali may be dead, CeCe gives us a refreshing look at how Ali's life would have look. This beyond-charismatic twenty-something blonde stylist that sure does has one heel in the present, one in the past, CeCe leaves us wanting more. The character's revealed as transgender and the show's second was met with a polarizing reception. Some television critics describe it as harmful, transphobic, and as a negative stereotype about trans people. One article states that TV shows adding transgender characters would be something to celebrate, since there is not nearly enough trans representation in the media, but that show get it all wrong. Several other reviewers were also concerned because the twist played into the long history of pop culture linking sociopathic behavior with transgender individuals. However, praise was given to Vanessa Ray's performance. Entertainment Weekly's Isabella Biedenharn calls her fantastic and compelling. AV Club reviewer LaToya Ferguson wrote that the choice of having CeCe Drake being / Charles was the best decision instead of choosing Wren. To her, it could have turned out worse, alluding to Gossip Girl's reveal. Ferguson applauded Vanessa Ray's emotional performance, reminding the audience why they were drawn to CeCe in the first place. She highlights how CeCe managed to make her wrongdoings acceptable, almost redeeming herself. For her portrayal in the show's sixth season, Ray won the Teen Choice Award for Choice TV: Villain.

Charlotte DiLaurentis was born on May 21 1988, at Radley Sanitarium as Charles Drake and assigned to the male at birth. She was born to Mary Drake, patient at Radley Sanitarium, and her ex-boyfriend, Ted Wilson, who was unaware of Mary's pregnancy. Mary's sister, Jessica and her husband, Kenneth DiLaurentis, adopt Charlotte as their daughter. She lived with her father, mother, adoptive sister and cousin Alison, and her adopted brother and cousin Jason until she was seven-years-old. One day, her mother was playing in the garden with Jason when Alison began crying in her crib. She told Alison she would get help and tapped on the window for her mom to come help, but Jessica didn't hear her because she was talking to a neighbor in the yard. Charlotte then takes it upon herself to make Alison feel better. She told her she would run her bath, as that always makes Charlotte feel better. Charlotte takes Baby Alison to the tub and drops her in; however, Alison started to drown. Mr. DiLaurentis ran in and saw Alison in the tub and Charlotte, not knowing what to do, just standing next to her Kenneth freaked out at Charlotte, as he Think Charlotte was trying to intentionally hurt Allison. According to Charlotte, as a child, she always asked her mother to buy her dresses but her dad wouldn't let Jessica. Charlotte surmised that her dad sent her to Radley because of her insistence that she was a girl and not a boy and that he knew that the bathtub incident was an accident, but he just used it as an excuse to send her away. Mr. DiLaurentis and Jessica decide to send Charlotte away to Radley Sanitarium. In Radley, Jessica would visit Charlotte regularly. Jessica bought Alison a yellow dress for Christmas when Charlotte was 12 years old. After that, for every outfit she bought for Alison, she would buy the same one for Charlotte. Later, Charlotte was on the roof of Radley with her best friend Bethany Young. Charlotte had a yellow dress on and a scarf and was twirling around. She then sits beside Bethany on the ledge of roof, where they talk. Charlotte said that she wished they could find a way out of here. Bethany says that getting out is easy, staying out is what's hard. Charlotte says that they need to come up with a really great story that is fabulous and devastating at same time. Suddenly, Marion Cavanaugh came on the roof and Charlotte go to go hide behind power box so Mrs. Cavanaugh wouldn't see her as a girl. Mrs Cavanaugh go up to Bethany near ledge and Bethany pushed her off the roof. Charlotte ran over to Bethany and asked her why she did that. Bethany then said that Charlotte do it. Everyone believes that Charlotte pushed Mrs Cavanaugh because she was a boy in dress. Jessica paid off Wilden to make sure Mrs Cavanaugh's death was ruled suicide.

Mona admits to seeing CeCe while being locked up in Radley, but she doesn't remember what they talked about because it was before they changed her medication. Emily is taken to the Police Station and questioned by Tanner about the video she receive. The video features CeCe in her Red Coat wearing Emily Mask and holding a sign that says guilty. CeCe does not make an appearance, however when Toby and Caleb go to investigate Red Coat's flight plan, they question Nigel Wright for a second time, he reluctantly reveals that he was paid to set up an anonymous private flight for CeCe to Lodge at Thornhill on the night of the fire in DAngerous GAme. At Hospital, after someone attacks Jenna Marshall, Shana tells Spencer that Jenna is afraid of CeCe Drake. Later, Red Coat walks up on DiLaurentis lawn and waits for Mrs. DiLaurentis to turn off the lights. Once she does, Red Coat begins heading towards the house and goes to the gate on the side of the porch. She then begin to drill the gate open and pull it off its hinges. After Caleb finds CeCe's address from old cable bill, Aria goes there and talks to CeCe's old roommate. She reveals that Alison got CeCe kicked out of college after she pushed girl down stairs at a frat party in Badass Seed. The girl says that CeCe believes that Spencer, Emily, Hanna and Aria are four she-devils that had something to with what happened and hats them for it. Later, Spencer and Toby visit Dr. Palmer to find out more about the blonde girl and he drop name Mrs. DiLaurentis. Spencer and Hanna question her about this and she tells them about the time when she received a phone call from Radley Sanitarium saying her daughter had checked in, and they believe she may be a danger to herself When she got there, it wasn't Alison, but CeCe dressed as her. Jessica tells Alison that CeCe was no longer welcome in their home, and, in present time, tells Spencer and Hanna that CeCe and Alison's friendship was obsessive, toxic, and that they 'wore' each other's personalities. They conclude that Alison Masks that Alison purchased weren't for them, but for CeCe. Liars discuss why CeCe would be at lunchtime, and if she is actually one who is living under DiLaurentis home. CeCe finally appears in a lair of some sorts, filled with photos of Alison and Liars. She is on the phone with someone and tells them that she isn't waiting there forever and that she's not going back to Rosewood. She hangs up with person and we see that she has Red Coat draped over her chair. Later, blonde figure in a black hoodie stands outside Ezra's apartment, listening in on his and Aria's conversation. CeCe was allegedly present during an episode in the first Season called Bad Seed. However, she was not see. She was also present during Grave New World, as she has a photo of Alison's meeting with Liars that seemed to have been taken from bushes. However, fans now know that she was likely other Gas Mask person. CeCe is listed as Prom Queen in the Rosewood Yearbook. However, it is unknown why, seeing as how she never attended Rosewood High. CeCe's character often causes confusion amongst fans for many reasons, such as: CeCe is seen outside Ezra's apartment wearing a black hoodie, A's infamous clothing choice. However, in EscApe From New York, Alison claims that CeCe helped her save Emily from. As stated above, Alison claims that CeCe only wore Red Coat in order to distract so Ali could save Emily. However, in Bring Down Hoe, episode which takes place before this event, CeCe is shown to have a Red Coat of her own. In Mirror Has Three face, CeCe's roommate tells Aria that CeCe hat them because Ali got her kick out of college. However, CeCe and Ali now seem to be friends. Most of this is cleared up in game Over, Charles. CeCe was wearing a hoodie because she is and she locked Emily inside Sawmill herself. However, fans are still unclear as to who her roommate is. CeCe was born as Charles Drake and later transition into Charlotte DiLaurentis. In order to get close to her family, she masquerade CeCe Drake so they wouldn't know who she was. CeCe was the primary suspect during Season 4A, which is ironic since she actually was. Charlotte seems to be based on three characters from the book series. Tabitha Clark, in that both are older friends to Alison, who look very similar to her and seem to know girls' secrets and both also get into a fight with Aria, which leads to them falling off ledge and Liars believing they are dead. Courtney DiLaurentis, in that both are hidden third child of DiLaurentis family and both have initials CD. Both of them were also sent to Radley Sanitarium at a young age. Real Alison DiLaurentis, in that both are second and both were sent to Radley Sanitarium as kids. CeCe is one of two masked Red Coats, both of whom are on-Team. Charlotte is Big, second A. In Hush, Hush, Sweet Liars, it is revealed that her birth mother is Mary Drake, twin sister of Jessica DiLaurentis. Charlotte has appeared or been mentioned in every season. She was mentioned in Season 1 as Alison's Killer, appeared in Season 2 as Red Coat, was a recurring character in Season 3, Season 4, Season 5 and Season 6 and is a guest character in Season 7.
