The Chiefs avenged last year's overtime AFC Championship Game loss with a 35-24 win over the Titans to notch their first Super Bowl appearance since 1969. Kansas City had to dig out of an early deficit again as the Chiefs trailed 10-0 in the first quarter. Similar to 24-point comeback Last Week against the Texans, Chiefs again stormed back behind their high-power offense. Patrick Mahomes finished the day 23-of-35 for 294 yards and three passing touchdowns, in addition to a dazzling 27-yard touchdown scramble in the second quarter. After a relatively slow start, Mahomes and the Chiefs offense found their momentum as the game progressed and were in control throughout the second half. Much of the talk entering Sunday involved Kansas City's plan to stop Titans running back Derrick Henry, who had a tally of 377 rushing yards and two total touchdowns in Tennessee's first two Playoff games. Though Henry does find the end zone, Chiefs held Henry in check with just 69 rushing yards on 19 carries as Kansas City's defense dominated the game's final 30 minutes. The Kansas City Chiefs will see their run defense at the forefront of discussion on Sunday when they face the Carolina Panthers. Panthers Star RB Christian McCaffrey is expected to make his return from injured reserve on Sunday. The fourth-year professional is coming off of the 2019 season where he had the third-most rushing yards and second-most rushing touchdowns in the NFL. McCaffrey suffered a high ankle sprain in Week 2 and has spent the season on injured reserve ever since. He's unique back, obviously, we all know that, Chiefs LB Anthony Hitchens said of McCaffrey. He's good. Kansas City Chiefs rookie DT Tershawn Wharton is receiving praise as one of the top defensive performers among rookies through first half of the season. An Undrafted free agent out of Division II Missouri, S & T always dreamt of playing in the NFL and working hard to get there. He spent extra time in the weight room, preparing to ensure he'd be able to stand up to competition at the next level. He earned the chance to compete in the East-West Shrine Bowl, opportunity that helped him get recognized by Kansas City scouts. Once. The Kansas City Chiefs will have their star defensive tackle back at practice on Friday. Chris Jones was placed on the reserve / COVID-19 list on Thursday, putting his status in question for Sunday's game against the Carolina Panthers. According to NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, Jones will be back in team facilities and allowed to practice on Friday. This suggests that Jones will be removed from the reserve / COVID-19 list and cleared to play on Sunday against Carolina. The report from Rapoport was later confirmed by KC Star beat reporter Herbie Teope.

The Chiefs are going to have to score on most of their possessions to win this game because the Titans are going to run the ball early and often in an attempt to control the clock. In the 2017 wildcard playoff game between these two teams, Tennessee went down 21-3 early, but kept feeding the ball to Derrick Henry and would complete comeback victory. The Titans are going to stick to what got them this far. I dont expect them to overthink things or get cute. The Chiefs defense must be ready for a full and physical four quarters. I believe the Chiefs offense will carry its momentum over from last week and jump out to a big lead. The Titans will get some garbage time points and the final score will make the game look more competitive than what it actually was. This time, KC defense finishes job.

Turning point

On doorstep of the Super Bowl, there is little teams can do now to change what they do or who they areespecially, if say teams have been grinding since the wild-card round, like the Tennessee Titans. So, in Sunday's opening slate many of the questions weve had about both teams heading into the playoffs still apply. The Titans won their regular-season matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs, 35-32, back on Nov. 10 to even their record at 5-5. At the time, Kansas City was without starting offensive linemen Eric Fisher and Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, while Tennessee was without Jurrell Casey and Corey Davis. It was a turning point of sorts for the aggressively middling Titans, who went on to win three more games in a rowa, cushion that they used to back their way into the playoffs. One could say the same thing about the Chiefs, who have not lost once since that early November game against the Titans. So, how will this Sunday rematch play out? Here is what were wondering ahead of the AFC Championship game:

As we enter the second half of the regular season, Chiefs are hitting their stride. Theyre steadily getting healthy, defense is getting into shape, and their schedule for the foreseeable future is nothing to be scar of. Theyll start in Tennessee with an average Titans team that plays old-school football with a solid run game and a stout defensive front. Ryan Tannehill seemed to be playing better than Marcus Mariota was but it wont matter. With Mahomes assumed to be returning and the receiving corps as healthy as it has been all season, there should be a ton of points put up by the Chiefs offense. Chiefs 38, Titans 17

The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to give Marcus Kemp another chance to make the team after allowing him to explore free agency last March. Kemp has re-sign with the team, per Matt Derrick of Chiefs Digest. Kemp was a nice find as a rookie free agent out of Hawaii, signing after he went unselected in the 2017 NFL Draft. The wide receivers impress enough in preseason to make the active roster, and then subsequently shoot up the depth chart to earn playing time on special teams. He appeared in every single game for the Chiefs in 2018. Unfortunately for Kemp, he was injured last preseason and placed on injured reserve. The Chiefs then decided to move on in March and were able to restructure and re-sign Sammy Watkins and Demarcus Robinson, respectively, which kept the wideout room quite full heading into preseason. The Chiefs brought back Kemp for tryout on Tuesday along with a pair of defensive backs, and clearly they liked what they saw enough to sign him again. Kemp has just turned 25 and will already be familiar with the coaching staff and Andy Reid's offense. That gives him a leg up in competition for any final roster spotse. G those who will be special team performers. Byron Pringle, Jody Fortson, and Gehrig Dieter are names most commonly linked with the competition for the final wide receiver spot on the depth chart. Other hopefuls include Jackson Barton, Aleva Hifo, Maurice Ffrench, Kalija Lipscomb, Andre Baccellia, and Justice Shelton-Mosely.

Dont call it a rematch. Just like last Sunday's game against the Texans, both of these teams are entirely different than the last time they play. The Titans defense is playing at a lights-out level, with a very surgical approach to different offenses they have been playing. Meanwhile, Chiefs offense looked to be clicking at an historic level again. When the Titans have the ball, Chiefs have to decide if they need to stop Derrick Henry or Ryan Tannehill. There are arguments for either approach, but if the Chiefs can make the Titans throw the ball 25-30 times, their odds of winning drastically improve. Game flow often dictates that decision, but so do putting Titans behind sticks and forcing Tannehill to beat you, while you play pass and avoid getting free shot after free shot on play-action. When the Chiefs have the ball, first few drives will be paramount in determining how the Titans will play them, but I would expect them to play lot of man coverage. As long as protection holds up, Chiefs simply have to continue making the Titans bracket Tyreek Hill, making them pay when they do and then finding isolate matchups with Sammy Watkins or Travis Kelce when help is occupy. The Titans have been playing well but this is Chiefs time. The Chiefs are clicking and they are coming into this game to score points. The Titans just do have kind of firepower. Chiefs 38, Titans 27

Riding high off of walk-off win against Minnesota, Chiefs already had a really good chance of beating the Titans at home. They can add a healthy Patrick Mahomes to that list of reasons, as it seems the high-power Chiefs offense is finally starting to get healthy. The offense is playing well, defense has been much improve, everything seems to be looking up for KC in the second half of the season. My one gripe is that the defense hasnt shown the ability to really shutout offense and keep them from scoring high amount of points. Opposing offenses have scored three or more touchdowns in three of the last four games, which is the only reason I ca foresee a blowout. Chiefs 31, Titans 24

Craig Stout (@barleyhop)

On paper, this is a game that could be close. The Raiders possess a strong rushing attack and have some solid weapons in Henry Ruggs and Darren Waller, both areas where the Chiefs defense could struggle to defend. However, this Chiefs offense has something to prove after lackluster performance against the Patriots, and Andy Reid will want to once again remind Jon Gruden who the offensive mastermind is in the AFC West. The Chiefs get off to a quick start, score easily, and take their foot off the gas to let the defense close it out. Chiefs 35, Raiders 20

Kent Swanson (@kent_swanson)

Dont look now, but the entire AP Laboratory is picking blowout. I think youll see a sharp performance from Patrick Lavon Mahomes that rivals what you saw against the Ravens. Hes unsatisfied with what he put on tape on Monday night, and his play will reflect that. I predicting five touchdowns, including two over 50 yards, one on bust coverage. Chiefs are favor by 12, and I have them comfortably covering. In fact, late touchdown makes it look closer than it is. The Defense continued their strong start and the Chiefs got after Derek Carr with Chris Jones leading the way. Chiefs 38, Raiders 20

Matt Lane (@ChiefinCarolina)

The worst thing for the Raiders was the Chiefs offense looking mortal against the New England Patriots. Hope for flat game from the Chiefs as they look forward to the next big AFC matchup with Buffalo Bills should be go and out window now. When the Chiefs have the ball, they have just about every advantage possible, from trenches to skill positions. Travis Kelce routinely torches the Raiders, but I expect the Raiders to utilize some new pieces to try and take him away, leaving Tyreek Hill and Sammy Watkins to feast on weak cornerback group. When the Raiders have the ball, their offensive line and running back tandem have advantage in the power run game, but when forced to play catchup, they just have horses. They have a good job improving their weapons, but they are still young and going up against secondary playing really well. The Chiefs controlled this one early as they came out to prove point and the game was never in doubt. Chiefs 38, Raiders 17

Pete Sweeney (@pgsween)

The Kansas City Chiefs offense came out of the last game against the New England Patriots humble after what was an impressive defensive effort from Bill Belichick and one of the stronger secondaries in the league. But even if Jon Gruden and company want to replicate the Patriots ' game plan, it is unlikely the Raiders have the personnel to do so. Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst ruled out due to COVID-19 while Chris Jones returns is quite an unlucky swing for Las Vegas, and I think it is a game in which Patrick Mahomes is comfortable with open looks while Derek Carr is uncomfortable with covered ones. The Raiders ' best chance would be to control the ball with talented young running back Josh Jacobs, but the Chiefs offense returning to prominence likely proves that option null and void. Chiefs 42, Raiders 17
