As an agency of the Department of Commerce, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's goal is to explain and anticipate changes in the earth's environment and to conserve and intelligently take care of the country's marine and seaside resources. To assist in this objective, the National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service makes sure timely access to global ecological information from satellites and other resources. The Office of Satellite Data Processing and Distribution directs the operation and handles of the central ground facilities that consume, process, and disperse environmental satellite data and derived items to foreign and residential users, the Environmental Satellite Processing Center. The Critical Infrastructure Protection project provides a different processing center or back-up for ESPC to keep essential operations and functions in the event of a unforeseen and continual loss of service at the ESPC. Top priority 1 products have a return to service time of within 24 hrs after the choice to activate the ESPC/CIP has been made.
