I I have had 2 kids graduate from CHS, and another is finishing up this year. The strength of a school is in its teachers. They are simply fantastic. They truly care about kids, and are fascinating people in their own right who go out of their way to create a special learning environment or go extra mile for student. They have been mentors for my children. Arts programs are also spectacular. With new addition that opened up last year, CLAYTON HIgh School is world - class, IMHO. And no, my kids don't wear Prada to school. This is an amazing school. Anyone who whines about not being happy because they do not feel popular is missing the point. There are few schools that have resources to give students the level of attention that they receive at CHS. When applying to college, C from CHS can outweigh at MOST other schools. If all you want is pretty on top of your HS report card, go elsewhere. If you want your kids to be prepared to achieve beyond HIgh School, you will be happy. All kids do not have monetary resources to go to Harvard, but with more rigorous standards at CHS, focus on achievement, and the spectacular reputation that this school has earned among high level universities, your child will have a better chance at a full ride scholarship. I attended CHS and was far better prepared than any of my colleagues to face the challenges of university and career. My poor grades in Math translate to + s in every college Math course I take. I watch peers take and retake certification tests now while I score top 10% on my first try every time. Thank you CHS. Ps in 10 years, you won't care who likes you and who didn n't in HIgh School. Clayton HIgh School is the MOST socially alienating school 've 've ever attend. If your father is not a doctor, and you don't dress in Armani or Prada and don't have a Blackberry or iPhone, you are somewhat ignored. Students have bad attitudes and foul mouths and * MOST * of teachers, not all, are lacking in helping students. I met a few nice people there, but overall my experience was less than satisfactory. The education I received was good, but not great. Students happen to have high test scores, but overall I find that a lot of students in my classes have very poor grades, which should not be tolerated by teachers or parents. Not great experience, CLAYTON HIgh. The school itself is very good, but there are issues for those that do not have lots of money in terms of social structure and opportunities for students. Everything is not always equal and money plays a huge role in this community and school. Parents can also be surprisingly not very engaged in the lives of their children. Hard place to fit in for kids who are not upper class.

History

First Clayton High School classes met on the upper floors of Forsyth School beginning in 1908. In 1911, school graduated its first class. Design by William B. Ittner, first Clayton High School building opened in September 1917 at 7500 Maryland Avenue. The building, which cost slightly less than 111 000 to construct and 14 000 to partially equip, includes six main classrooms and a large study hall - library. The building also features chemistry, biology and physics laboratories, art room, music room, and several vocational and technical classrooms. The school also includes a combined gymnasium and a 700 - seat auditorium. By 1940s, however, building was overcrowd, and the District considered multiple options for its replacement. Although planned to open in 1948, postwar supply shortages delayed construction of the new building until the early 1950s. In 1952, school building was sold to the department store chain Famous - Barr, and the school was demolished for a store parking lot. A new building opened in 1954 at 1 Mark Twain Circle, and the first class graduated in 1955. At the start of the school's 1954 opening, school's entrance featured a six - foot diameter granite globe sculpture weighing nearly ten tons. A block of ice was used to set the globe in place.
