DNA, or deoxyribonucleic acid, is the genetic material in humans and nearly all other organisms. Most DNA lies in the cell center, however a small amount of DNA can also be found in the mitochondria. Mitochondria are frameworks within cells that transform the energy from food into a type that cells can use. The information in DNA is stored as a code made up of four chemical bases: adenine, cytosine, guanine, and thymine. DNA bases match up with each other, A with T and C with G, to develop units called base sets. Each base is also affixed to a sugar molecule and a phosphate particle. Each hair of DNA in the double helix can act as a pattern for duplicating the series of bases. Since each new cell demands to have an exact duplicate of the DNA present in the old cell, this is vital when cells split.
