Here are the best artists and bands from South Dakota. South Dakota has many attractions that draw people from all over the United States. Mount Rushmore, which bear likeness of George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, and Theodore Roosevelt, is a massive monument to men who helped build America. It serves to represent where the country has been, where it is now, and where it should go in the future. It is a good old-fashion piece of classic Americana, much like music that has come out of state over the years. Many of the most famous musical artists from South Dakota play in country and folk genres. However, indie rock is also popular in the region. There are plenty of venues in the area for singers and bands to perform in. The state is also home to a number of music festivals. Each year, city of Sioux Falls hosts a Jazz and Blues Festival. Additionally, state has had Sturgis Motorcycle Rally every summer since 1982 where plenty of classic rockers perform. Other popular South Dakota artists include Paradise Fears, Kickback, Bob Stewart, and Spill Canvas. Check out this list of South Dakota musical artists. You may just come across some acts you listen to all the time. You may also find some awesome new artists to listen to for the first time.

The origins of Dakota can be traced back as far as the early 1970s in North East Pennsylvania, USA, to a band called Buoys and a million-selling single called Timothy. The song, written by Rupert Holmes, was supposedly about the local Sheppton mine disaster of 1963 and reached the Billboard Top 40 chart on April 17 1971, remaining on the chart for eight weeks, peaking at 17, as listed in Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits by Joel Whitburn. Buoys was spearhead by lead singer and guitarist Bill Kelly and Jerry Hludzik on guitar and supporting vocals. In 1978, Bill and Jerry leave the group and team up as the Jerry-Kelly Band, making use of members from popular local bands. That same year, the band was signed to Epic Records under the production team of Danny Seraphine, and David Hawk Wolinski of Rufus, to record Somebody Else's Dream, first and only Jerry-Kelly album. In 1979, with the band's next scheduled release due, Columbia Records insisted that the band change its name and, after several options were discussed, Dakota was choose. Jerry-Kelly drummer, Gary Driscoll, left the band in early 1980, leaving the band without a drummer. Producers Danny Seraphine and Hawk Wolinski draft in Rufus drummer, John Robinson, and produce Dakota's first self-title album Dakota, with the track If It take All Night becoming the band's first single to receive regional airplay, peaking at 78 on Billboard Charts in 1980.

Long-time friend of Bill and Jerry, Michael Stahl, who was working with Queen on their 1980 Game Tour, managed to secure Dakota as opening act for Queen on their 35-date Tour. Dakota's lineup now consists of Jerry Hludzik and Bill Kelly on guitars and vocals, Bill McHale on bass, Jeff Mitchell on keyboards, Lou Cossa on keys and guitar and new drummer, Tony Romano. During the Tour, a feud between Columbia Records and Band Chicago develop and Dakota's Association with Chicago founding member, Danny Seraphine, led to the Band receiving lackluster backing from Columbia Records For remainder of their time at the label.

Runaway (1984)

Dakota in 1984 released their second album called Runaway that was meant to be their best work, AOR masterpiece and legend of what we call the West Coast genre. Although it was released on mighty MCA Records, who scored big times with Night Ranger that period, but also had some classic releases of period 1983-1984 such as Preview, White Sister, Automatix, Fortune, etc., Album suffered from poor MCA promotion, It didnt become huge. It took 20 years for this underrated AOR classic to be re-release and take glory that should have been lost all these years and become a must have album for AOR fans all over the world. The new digitally remasterd version has high quality sound, two bonus tracks and a radio spot. This classic record is filled with excellent harmony vocals, catchy choruses and hooks from start to end with as much space needed for keys and guitars. It was mixed by Humberto Gatica and produced by Danny Seraphine, best know for being the original drummer and founding member of rock group Chicago. Of course, it has to be mentioned that some of the players that were involved in this album, such as Paul Jackson JR., Steve Porcaro, Richie Zito, Neil Steubeuhaus, David J. Hawk Wolinski, saxophone expert Ernie Watts and Bill Champlin, to name a few. The album opens up with the classic AOR tune Runaway, perfect sample of pure AOR song writing that has everything from big hooklines to harmony vocals, covered with pomp keyboards and catchy chorus. Tonight Could Last Forever is an excellent work of pure 80s AOR style with a catchy chorus followed by Heroes strong ballad with great piano / keyboards in the background throughout the whole song. Rebel come Home continues in the same melodic style with a great beat and awesome background. Vocals in chorus and splendor continue with magnificent AOR Into Night in the same style as Runaway with strong vocals, catchy chorus and keys that once you hear it youll never forget it. Angry Men has a huge AOR tone that starts off slow and turns out to be a rocker and catchy song with a suburb chorus and amazing guitar solo. Over and Over is a lovely smoothy song with a nice mid-tempo tune but lucky saxophone which should not have been there. Love Wont Last has some truly memorable moments in It with great lyrics and harmony vocals. If Only Id Know It is a splendid example of how good a ballad must be, with powerful vocals, catchy chorus, hooks and fluffy keys. Bonus tracks Believin and More Love are nice additions to the whole album with nice background vocals, harmony keyboards and strong choruses. Really a masterpiece that every AOR fan should have in his collection.
