Following the lead of San Diego Unified School District, Escondido High schools will open the school year with online instruction only for at least first grading period, school Board decided Tuesday. District administrators had prepared to offer two options, independent online learning system, and a hybrid schedule with limited on-campus classes, combined with digital learning. However, Board heard testimony from a number of teachers who said they would not feel safe delivering in-person instruction given the rising number of COVID-19 cases, and ultimately decided to start all students online only. Students will still choose between independent study using the online Edgenuity system, in which students work on self-pace digital classes, and structured remote learning system, in which students would log onto virtual classes with teachers at scheduled times, using online learning platform Canvas. The Board also decided to delay the fall semester from the planned start date of Aug. 11 to Aug. 25, to provide more time to plan for the new education model. They also moved the first grading period back from six weeks to just under five, so they plan to revisit the online-only system on Sept. 25. Even with that additional time, however, Board members say they do not think the pandemic would be adequately controlled to open in person classes at the end of August. There have been more than 800 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Escondido, according to county health data. I dont foresee us being in position to open in six weeks, Board President Dane White say. I also, at my core, dont feel comfortable reopening with the amount of safety concerns and unknowns that we have. On Monday, San Diego Unified School District, along with Los Angeles Unified School District, state's two largest school districts, announced that they would start the year with online instruction only, though they acknowledge that months of remote learning following COVID-19 closures had caused learning losses, particularly for low-income students. About 20 teachers and other school staff members spoke to Escondido Union High School District Board Tuesday, addressing concerns that reopening in person would threaten their health or that of family members in high-risk categories. Many of us have families we need to care for. It would be a great mistake to put those people in danger if we rush, said Joseph Gelormini, teacher at Orange Glen High School. It would be a courageous decision by our District, big commitment by our District, to start with distance learning. Rita Guerra, counselor at Escondido High School, says that while distance learning could leave some at risk students at further disadvantage, health risks of reopening in person are too great. My heart is tear, she say. While I am completely aware of inequities in our community, I am completely aware that distance learning may exacerbate the achievement gap. I humbly ask you to lead with safety first.

History

The first building to house Escondido High School was located in downtown Escondido. The University of Southern California constructed it in 1889 for use as a Methodist seminary. The seminary operated for ten years but eventually closed due to lack of finances. USC donated the building to a man named Henry Putnam, who himself gave it to Escondido Union High School District. Overcrowding prompted construction of a three-story building just south of the original site; This new building opened in 1927. The original building burnt down in 1929. Severe damage to many school buildings in the 1933 Long Beach earthquake prompted the California State Legislature to pass the Field Act, mandating that school buildings be earthquake-resistant. The State inspected EHS and found the campus to be unsafe, but the inspection report was never Act upon. In the 1950s, District wanted to construct a new High School to address overcrowding. The new school was to be named Vallecitos High School and located at present-Day North Broadway site. Two bond measures were required to fund construction. When the District begins the process of submitting second bond measure, State confronts them with an old inspection report. The State again declared the campus unsafe and then required the District to vacate EHS before attempting the bond measure. Classes were moved to partially complete Vallecitos High, temporary tents, and buildings at EHS that were still considered safe. The North Broadway campus was completed in 1954. Vallecitos name was dropped and the campus took Escondido High name. The downtown campus was fully demolished in the mid-1980s.
