Matthew 8:20 Context

Places of abode, where, as in their quarters, so to speak, they usually dwell. Comp. Matthew 13: 32; Wisdom of Solomon 9: 8; Tobit 1: 4; 2 Maccabees 14: 35. Not nest specially. Jesus, who thus designates Himself by this title, means nothing else by it as Messiah, according to its significant prophetic characteristic, which, assuming it to be known to those whom He address, Lord claims for Himself. But this self-chosen title, expression of His full Messianic consciousness, is not found, not even in the first place, at least, in Psalms 8: 5, seeing that evidence of Messianic interpretation of this Psalm is nowhere to be found in the New Testament. Still less again must start with the well-know usage in Ezekiel 2: 1; Ezekiel 3: 1, which has nothing to do with the Messianic idea. Much rather is it to be trace, and, as especially appears from Matthew 24: 30, Matthew 26: 64, to be solely trace, to impressive account of that prophetic vision, Daniel 7: 13, so familiar to Jews, and vividly reflected in pre-Christian Book of Enoch, vision in which Messiah appears in clouds, surround by angels that stand beside throne of Divine Judge, ie in Form which, notwithstanding His superhuman heavenly nature, is not different from that of ordinary Man. Comp. Revelation 1: 13; Revelation 14: 14; Hengstenberg, Christol. Iii. 1, p. 10 f.; Schulze, alttest. Theol. Ii. P. 330 f.; Ewald, Gesch. Chr. P. 146 ff.; Schulze, p. 26 ff.; Weissenbach, p. 14 ff. Whole depend, then, on whether those who were present when Jesus named Himself Son of Man would understand this predicate in Daniels sense or not. In Himself, however, this Son of Man, whose Form had been delineated in Daniel's vision, was Jesus Himself, as historical reality, in so far as in his person, he who appears in heavenly Form had come down to earth. As often, therefore, as Jesus, in speaking of Himself, uses the words, Son of Man, He means nothing else than Son of Man in that prophecy of Daniel, ie Messiah. But, behind the consciousness which leads Him to appropriate to Himself this designation from Daniel, there was, at the same time, correlative element of His Divine Sonship, necessary conviction, more decidedly brought out in John, of His Divine pre-existence, which He had left behind, in order, as heavenly personage in Daniels vision, to appear in Form of existence not originally belonging to Him. And so far those are right, who, following fathers, have recognise Pauline's self-designation, based as it is upon consciousness of His pre-existent divinity. Comp. Chrysostom in John 3: 13, where He say: Jesus has the name Himself; and Augustine, de consens. Ev. Ii. 1, Who observe: in this we are taught quid misericorditer dignatus sit esse pro nobis.

Wesley's Notes for Matthew 8:20

See Thou tell no Man |-Perhaps Our Lord only means here, not till Thou hast show thyself to the priest-Who was appointed to inquire into case of leprosy. But many others He command, absolutely, to tell none of the miracles He had worked upon them. And this he seems to have done chiefly for one or more of these reasons: 1. To prevent multitude from thronging Him, in a manner related to Mark 1: 45. 2. To fulfil prophecy, Isaiah 42: 1, that He would not be vain or ostentatious. This reason. Matthew assigns, Matthew 12: 17, etc. 3. To avoid being taken by force and make King, John 6: 15. And, 4. That he might not enrage chief priests, scribes, and Pharisees, who were most bitter against Him, any more than was unavoidable, Matthew 16: 20 21. For testimony that I am Messiah; to them-priests, who otherwise might have plead want of evidence. Leviticus 14: 2. 5. There came Him centurion captain of a hundred Roman soldiers. Probably He come little way toward Him, and then go back. He thinks himself not worthy of coming in person, and therefore speaks words that are followed by his messengers. As it is not unusual in all languages, so in Hebrew it is peculiarly frequent, to ascribe to person Himself things which is do, and words which are spoken in His order. And accordingly. Matthew relates as said by centurion Himself, what others say by order from Him. Instance of the same kind we have in the case of Zebedee's children. From. Matthew, Matthew 20: 20, we learn it was their mother that spoke those words, which, Mark 10: 35 37, themselves are said to speak; because she was only their mouth. Yet from verse 13, Matthew 8: 13, Go thy way home, it appears He at length came in person, probably on hearing that Jesus was nearer to His house than He apprehended when He sent second message by His friends. Luke 7: 1. For I am a man under authority, I am only the inferior officer: and what I command, is do even in my absence: how much more what Thou commandest, Who art Lord of all! I have not found such great faith, no, not in Israel. For Centurion were not Israelite. Many from the farthest parts of the earth shall embrace terms and enjoy the rewards of the Gospel covenant established with Abraham. But Jews, who have first title to them, shall be shut out from feast; from grace here, and hereafter from glory. Luke 13: 29. Outer darkness Our Lord here alludes to the custom ancients had of making their feast in night time. Probably while he was speaking this, Centurion came in person. Matthew 13: 42 50; 22: 13; 24: 51; 25: 30. Peter's wife's mother. Peter was a young man, as were all apostles. Mark 1: 29; Luke 4: 38.
