Dr. Tumer also has served as program and conference chair at major conferences, as associate editor on key journals, and on numerous editorial and advisory boards. She has organized and been invited to multiple cross - Agency workshops to chart research directions for federal agencies, including NASA and NSF. Dr. Tumer will serve as associate dean for Research in the College of Engineering from 2013 until assuming her current position. In that role, she built and led the Research Administration Office for the College of Engineering and established a formal faculty development program that resulted in record numbers of early career awards. Strategies she implemented lead to transformative changes for the College of Engineering, including significant increases in proposal submissions, awards and research expenditures. Prior to joining the OSUs faculty in 2006, Dr. Tumer was researcher, group lead, deputy area lead and program manager at NASA Ames Research Center for over eight years. Dr. Tumer received her undergraduate, master's and doctorate degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin. Her research interests are in areas of system design, reliability engineering, and risk analysis, and her work has been applied to spacecraft, aircraft, and nuclear power plant design. She received multiple research awards, including a faculty researcher Award in 2010 and Research collaboration Award in 2012both, from OSU.

Irem is originally from Turkey and currently lives in the United States. She is a member of Istanbul Bar and had legal practice focus on dispute resolution before joining UNFPA. Irem received a Master of Law degree from Istanbul Bilgi University, where she focused on youth participation in advancing SRHR through International human rights mechanisms for her thesis work. Since becoming Young Leader, Irem taken on leadership roles in youth networks such as European Youth Parliament and Model United Nations and was selected as UNFPA Global Innovation Fellow. Irem was President of 81 International Session of European Youth Parliament. The Session, which take place in Dublin and Belfast, focus on the theme Crossing Borders, Transcending Conflict. To her, meaningful youth engagement means young people are given platforms and tools to shape decisions that impact their lives. In my free time, Irem enjoy photography, traveling, and yoga.
