The Rolling Stones released the aptly titled It's Only Rock 'n Roll on Oct. 16, 1974. After everything they had been through, it was a good reminder to fans, critics and possibly even themselves. Such timely admonitions were almost becoming a periodic necessity in an era of rampant progressive-Rock experimentation and fast-changing trends like glam, when popular music was still coming to grips with life after the Beatles, and the Stones were still battling Who, lead Zeppelin and other arena-conquering titans for the title of world greatest Rock band. But the Rolling Stones' calculate efforts at accomplishing global dominance were pursued with the rehearsed nonchalance of true Rock stars, and conditions that give rise to It Only Rock n' Roll were marked by the same combination of changeable plans, happy accidents and impulsive about-face that always seem to keep things interesting. Goats Head Soup, their most recent album, was still relatively new-having hit stores in August 1973. So, sessions for It Only Rock n' Roll were supposed to combine some cover songs with recordings from their just-conclude European tour, which spanned 40 shows throughout September and October. That's where things stand when Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Mick Taylor, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts arrive at Munichs Musicland Studios in November, anyway. New song ideas began taking shape, but sessions were so laid-back that Jagger and Richards didnt even bother to ring up longtime producer Jimmy Miller. They wind up producing new material themselves under the newly minted Glimmer Twins pseudonym. Beyond that, Munichs cold urban surroundings affect new work-in-progress quite differently than warm Jamaican vibes had Goats Head Soup. City brought an added sense of urgency to If You Cant Rock Me and Dance Little Sister, palpable melancholy to Till Next Goodbye and If You Really Want to Be My Friend and convincing philosophical gravitas to Time Waits for No One. By Time, typically sporadic sessions finally wrap at Jaggers stately English Manor Stargroves in April 1974, those Caribbean memories had long faded away, Goats Head Soup's funkier ingredients had been reined in. Even the controversy that overwhelmed Star Star had been redirected in less cynical directions to comical short and curlies. But the title track really set the tone for How It Only Rock n' Roll would be received and perceived as renewed commitment to Rolling Stones Rock 'n Roll purism. It had taken shape with no small amount of help and inspiration from face ' guitarist Ron Wood, who let Richards crash at his house for Time. This budding friendship eventually paved the way for Wood to replace disgruntled Taylor, who left the band two months after this album's release. But first Wood endured a long trial run that covered the length of the bands ' 1975 touring commitments and the recording of 1976's Black and Blue album. The Rolling Stones ended up auditioning everyone from Peter Frampton to Jeff Beck for the vacant spot.

In July, lead single, It's Only Rock 'n Roll, was release, and despite its familiar sound, it surprised many by failing to reach the top 10 in the US. With its sing-along chorus, it has become a Staple at Rolling Stones concerts. B-side Through Lonely Nights dates back to previous Year's Goats Head Soup sessions. Cover of ain't Too Proud To Beg, originally a 1966 hit by Temptations, was released as second single in the US Only, where it also became a top 20 hit. Its parent album appeared in October with brisk initial sales, reaching number two in the UK and number One in the US, where it eventually Go platinum. Reviews were largely positive, with Jon Landau calling It's Only Rock 'n Roll one of the most intriguing and mysterious, as well as the darkest, of all Rolling Stones Records. However, Rock critic Lester Bangs disparage Album in Village Voice, much like Goats Head Soup, saying, Stones have become oblique in their old age, which is just another word for perverse except that perverse is the corniest concept extant as they realize at inception. The soup was friendly and safe. I want edge and this album doesn't reassure me that I'll Get It, What curious situation To Be stick In, but maybe that's beauty of the Stones, hah, hah, kid? This album is false. Numb. But it cut like a dull blade. Are they doing cutting, or are we? Author James Hector added that It's Only Rock 'n Roll was the definitive turning point for the band. The Album marks the band's decisive entry into comfortable living as Rock's elder statesmen. From this point on, their youth culture importance vanish, and there would be few musical surprises in the future. Hector concludes with on It's Only Rock 'n Roll, band have become what they imagine their mass audience desire them to be. They were wrong. Instead of immediately touring to promote the album, band decided to head back to Munich Studios to record the Next Album, to Mick Taylor's disappointment and subsequent resignation from the band. The tour didn't happen until the following summer in the US, Tour of Americas '75, with future member Ronnie Wood taking Taylor's place on guitar. The title track has become a permanent staple of the band's live setlist, but other songs have only been performed occasionally or not at all. In order to promote the album, music videos were filmed for several of the songs. The most commonly seen video from the album was the video For It's Only Rock 'n Roll, featuring a band playing in a tent, which gradually fills with soap bubbles. Videos were also film For ain't Too Proud To Beg and Till Next Goodbye. Two different versions of Luxury exist.

History

The band Spend first few months of 1968 working on material for their next album. Those sessions result in the song jumpin' Jack Flash, released as a single in May. The subsequent Album, Beggars Banquet, eclectic mix of country and Blues-inspire tunes, marks the band's return to their roots. It was also the beginning of their collaboration with producer Jimmy Miller. It features lead single Street Fighting Man and sympathy for the Devil. Controversy over the design of the Album Cover, which features public toilets with graffiti covering the walls of the stall, delayed the album's release for nearly six months. It was well received at time of release and reached No. 3 in the UK and No. 5 in the US. It features John Lennon, Yoko Ono, Dirty Mac, Who, Jethro Tull, Marianne Faithfull, and Taj Mahal. The footage was shelved for twenty-eight years but was finally released officially in 1996, With a DVD version released in October 2004. By Time of Beggars Banquet's release, Brian Jones was only sporadically contributed to the band. Jagger said that Jones was not psychologically suited to this way of life. His drug use had become a hindrance, and he was unable to obtain a US visa. Richards reports that in June, meeting with Jagger, Watts and himself at Jones' house, Jones admitted that he was unable to go on the road again, and left the band saying, I've left and if I Want To I can come back. On 3 July 1969, less than a month later, Jones drowned under mysterious circumstances in the swimming pool at his home, Cotchford Farm, in Hartfield, East Sussex. The band auditioned several guitarists, including Paul Kossoff, as replacements for Jones before settling on Mick Taylor, who was recommended to Jagger by John Mayall. The Rolling Stones were scheduled to play at a Free Concert for Blackhill Enterprises in London's Hyde Park, two days after Jones' death; they decided to go ahead with the show as a tribute to him. The concert, their first with new guitarist Mick Taylor, was performed in front of an estimated 250 000 fans. Granada Television production team filmed the performance, which was broadcast on British Television as Stones in Park.
