History

KCBS-TV is one of oldest television stations in world. It was signed on by Don Lee Broadcasting, which owns chain of Radio stations on Pacific Coast, and was first licensed by Federal Radio Commission, forerunner of Federal Communications Commission, as experimental Television station W6XAO in June 1931. Station Went On Air On December 23 1931, And By March 1933 Was Broadcasting Programming One Hour Each Day On Mondays Through Saturdays. Station Used Mechanical Camera, Which Broadcast Only Film Footage In 80-line Image, But Used All-electronic Receivers As Early As 1932. It went off air in 1935, and then reappeared using improved mechanical camera, producing 300-line image in June 1936. By August 1937, W6XAO had programming six days each week, with programming starting in April 1938. By 1939, station use fully electronic system and image quality improved to 441 lines. At time, optimistic estimate of station's viewership was 1 500 people. Many receiver sets were built by television hobbyists, though made sets were available in Los Angeles. Station's Six-day Weekly Schedule Consists Of Live Talent On Four Nights, And Films On Two Nights. By 1942, there were estimated 400-500 television sets in Los Angeles area, with Don Lee Broadcasting placing television receivers at following public places: Wilshire Brown Derby, Kiefer's Pine Knot Drive-In, Vine Street Brown Derby, Griffith Planetarium, Miramar Hotel, Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and Town House on Wilshire Boulevard. During World War II, programming was reduced three hours, every other Monday. Station's Frequency Was Switched From Channel 1 To Channel 2 In March 1946 When FCC Decided To Reserve Channel 1 For Low-power Community Television Stations, Before Eliminating It Completely. Station Was Granted Commercial License As KTSL On May 6 1948, And Was Named Of T Homas S. L Ee, Son Of Don Lee. Station Became Affiliated With DuMont Television Network Later That Year. KTSL also launched Peter Potter's Jukebox Jury that year, musical / quiz series that began to be broadcast nationally during 1953-1954 season on ABC. Many later well-know entertainers appear on program to judge latest releases from recording companies.

News operation

KCBS had 4 newscasts from time to time. It was first in Southland with 4: 30 pm newscast, that was later expanded to hour. KCBS dropped its 4 pm newscasts in 1998 in favor of short-live Howie Mandel Show, which was cancelled after only one season, then in 1999, Woman 2 Woman public affairs Show. After acquisition of now-sister station KCAL-TV, KCBS reintroduced 4 pm newscast, but now airs exclusively on KCAL-TV. Dr. Phil now airs in 4 pm slot on KCBS. From 1986 to 1987, KCBS had 7 pm newscast, airing CBS Evening News immediately beforehand at 6: 30. Pm. KCBS was also last station in Los Angeles area to offer 6: 30 pm local newscast, when its 6 pm newscast ran for hour, until KTLA launched one in January 2009.
