Former Phoenix Suns Point Guard Kevin Johnson is a finalist for the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and he doesnt deserve it. I readily acknowledge that such proclamation will make me a social pariah in the central Arizona basketball community, but KJ was good but not great. 12 NBA seasons Regular Season career average: 17. 9 ppg, 9. 1 apg and 1. 5 spg Playoffs career average: 19. 3 ppg, 8. 9 apg and 1. 3 spg 5x NBA All-Star 4x All NBA Second Team 1x All NBA Third Team NBA Most improve Player one NBA Finals appearance 2x seasons playing at least 80-games 6x seasons playing 70-games or less last two lines on his resume are what should preclude KJ from the Hall of Fame. Yes, he was great when he was there, but he was wasnt always there. You have to show up on a consistent basis to be great or we base your legacy on conjecture. Or to put it another way, you fall into the chasm of coulda be like Tim Hardaway, Mark Price or Anfernee Hardaway. It no one's fault that injuries curtail a possibly great legacy and turn into a very good career. That cruelty of life and everyone has instant where pratfalls overtake promise. Tim Hardaways career mirrors KJs, except that Johnson has made positive contribution to society in the political realm and Hardaway is known for his homophobic tirade. But let keep comparison to basketball court and not the court of popular opinion. 14 NBA seasons, 1998-2002 Regular Season career average: 17. 7 ppg, 8. 2 apg and 1. 6 spg Playoffs career average: 16. 8 ppg, 6. 6 apg and 1. 6 spg 5x NBA All Star 1x All NBA First Team 3x All NBA Second Team 1x All NBA Third Team 2000 Olympics Gold Medal 5x seasons playing at least 80 Regular Season games 5x seasons playing 70 Regular Season games or less when healthy, Hardaway was an elite player but same legs that give him Utep Two Step cause him to miss entire 1993 Season and large chunks during his prime of 1992 and 1994. From 1990-1994 Hardaway averaged 22. 1 ppg and 9. 8 apg in 291 Regular Season games. Those are elite numbers but prime was too short. Regardless, Hardaway has an impressive resume that a lot of us have forgotten about. Impressive but not elite and like Johnson, not Hall of Fame caliber. Well, I always have fond memories of RUN TMC to fall back on and speculation on what could have been. Lets get down to brass tacks, Mark Price is reason Cleveland Cavaliers ship KJ to Phoenix. Johnson was prices backup in Cleveland and there was little reason to think that he was going to take incumbents job with the Cavaliers at the time.

Despite excelling at two sports in High School, Johnson decided to play basketball exclusively at collegiate level, and accepted a scholarship to play basketball for the University of California at Berkeley. Playing all four seasons, Johnson ended his college basketball career in 1987 as the school's All-time leader in assists, steals, and scoring. He was also the first player in the Pac-10 Conference to post triple-double in statistics, and he was named to the Pac-10's All-Conference First Team in both his junior and senior seasons, averaging 17. 2 points and 5. 0 assists in his final basketball season. His number 11 is retire. Originally Draft in 1986 to play professional baseball with Oakland Athletics as an infielder, Johnson spent his collegiate summers with the A's minor-league team in Modesto, California, but after being advised by scout that his future was in basketball, Johnson never looked back to baseball, and he was seventh selection overall by Cleveland Cavaliers in 1987 NBA Draft. Originally Draft to challenge incumbent point guard Mark Price of Georgia Tech for the starting spot, Johnson found himself on the bench as Price's backup during the 1987-88 NBA season, since Price significantly improved during training Camp and convincingly won the starting job. On February 28, 1988, Johnson was traded to Phoenix Sun in exchange for forward Larry Nance, Mike Sanders, and a future draft pick. Phoenix also received a draft pick in the trade-one that was used next season to select Suns stalwart guard Dan Majerle. Adjusting rapidly to the change of scenery and much-increase playing time, Johnson excel, and he was named NBA Rookie of Month in April 1988, averaging 15. 1 points, 10. 6 assists, 5. 6 rebounds, and 0. 864 free throw percentage for the Month. That next year, in his first full season with Phoenix, Johnson emerge, averaging 20. 4 points and 12. 2 assists to win the NBA's Most Improved Player Award. It was also the first of three straight seasons in which he averaged at least 20. 0 points and 10. 0 assists, joining Oscar Robertson and Isiah Thomas as the only players in league history to accomplish that feat for three consecutive seasons. From 1989 to 1991, he was selected to the All-NBA Second Team, earning Third Team honors in 1992 and Second Team honors again in 1994. KJ also was selected to the NBA All-Star Team in 1990, 1991, and 1994 and made the playoffs every year of his career after his Rookie season. In the 1991 NBA All-Star Game in Charlotte, KJ wore 41 instead of his familiar 7. Announcers Bob Costas and Mike Fratello speculate it was to Honor teammate Mark West who was not picked to participate in 40 All-Star Game, despite his valuable contributions on boards and in trenches for the Suns on a nightly basis. The 1992-93 Suns, led by Johnson and Charles Barkley, posted an NBA-best 62-20 record.
