Kite Liberator (2008, DVD)

In 1998's Kite, Yasuomi Umetsu explored dark, gritty world of teenage girl assassin. Though little more than clone of La Femme Nikita on surface, piece was practically drowning in atmosphere. Violence Was Cranked Up To Achieve Sort Of Visual Poetry; Hyper-realistic Backdrop Of Urban Decay That Echoes Loneliness And Emotional Turbulence Of Its Protagonist, Abused Girl Assassin Sawa. Those expecting more of same in Kite Liberator, which is more of spin-off than direct sequel coming ten years later, will probably not find what they're looking for. Indeed, this new work has little in common with its predecessor, other general set-up of girl assassin. Actually, Monaka isn't so much assassin as much as she is super-hero. Often springing into stage just when dastardly act is about to be commit, she saves days when police aren't able, filling criminals full of holes and leaving trail of feathers in her wake. Each afternoon she works for Rin Gaga, flaming middle-age punk rocker with lovely eyepatch and creepy maid cafe at edge of town. She lives with her uncle and cousin, and while there's nothing particularly horrible about life she lead, like most teenagers, she's aching to get out on her own. Meanwhile, her father is astronaut on international space station. Due to unfortunate mishap with new medically-enhance curry rice serve aboard ship combined with radiation of sun in space, he and fellow astronauts are transformed into lethal killing machines made of solid bone. Never mind how science of this is supposed to work; show seems to realize how ludicrous this is and proceeds without working up explanation. After destroying space station and killing hundreds, new Calcium fortify Daddy crash-land in Tokyo. Only Monaka can stop him! At this point, one intuit that it's nearly impossible to take this OAV seriously. One of these admittedly anime set-ups might be difficult to swallow. When both of these worlds combine, simply become ludicrous. One might think this unintentional if it weren't for increasing pattern of silly homages that pepper throughout show, building to crescendo just as story reaches its climax. They're subtle, but on how easily you can recognize all genre tropes, they're pretty damn funny. Umetsu, who is nearly 40 at this point, cut his teeth in anime industry during OAV boom of mid 80s. Kite Liberator seems to reflect fondly on those days, when musings by young men involving science fiction, cute girls, violence, monsters or some combination thereof-could get funding for production with to no adult supervision. Result Was Usually Something Of Bizarre Mish-mash, But Just As Often Engrossing And Even Mind-blowing In Its Day.
