General | Latest Info

From their respective metropolises, Khruangbin and Leon Bridges offer fascinating variations on the notion of Texas Music. Fort Worth-base Bridges explores the strain of Soul that is more closely associated with Mississippi and Chicago than Lone Star State, while Houston trio Khruangbin dabbles in the strain of the global mind, stoner-friendly psychedelia that authorities didnt always look upon so kindly. Today, both artists find themselves rising stars, garnering millions of streams and promoting a vision of a more diverse and open Texas, one that lead to headlines like this. Two team up for a joint North American tour in 2018, but heading into studio together wasnt obvious next step. Their partnership might pay dividends down road, but at four songs in 20 minutes, Texas Sun is both tantalizing and a little half-bake. The title track gives a glimpse of how each party might bolster the other: Khruangbin bassist Laura Lee, guitarist Mark Speer, and drummer Donald Johnson impart some much-need looseness and pliancy to Bridges ' vocals, while the singer in turn grounds their wandering with song structures and sturdy vocals. Texas Sun is a simmering road-trip number, with Bridges delivery rendering that oppressive Sun into something more mellow. Khruangbin provide a head-nodding beat, but for all of their synergy, result still resemble boilerplate Bob Seger. Slinky Midnight could have been crib from the Numero Group's Eccentric Soul compilation. Bridges lyrics again situate us in a moving vehicle, this time at night instead of sweltering midday heat. They conjure a wistful mood, with lyrics that detail new love in the passenger seat, cruising around with no particular destination in mind, smoking with windows down, backseat beckoning from the rearview mirror. Put on your lavender / perfume and nice dress, Bridges croons sweetly. C-Side boasts the sultriest groove, with Lees ' loping bassline riding behind clopping cowbell and mallet percussion. But Bridges ' chorus is diffuse and unmemorable, and the percolating beat lingers in mind for longer than words. Smoky minor-key ballad Conversion showcases Bridge honey, unhurried delivery at its most effective. If anything, four songs leave you wanting more from this collaboration, offering up brief, blurry glimpses of their Texas landscape rather than expansive vistas that they might arrive at should they ride together a little longer.

Collaborative EP begins during Bridges ' 2018 North American tour with a retro instrumental band, beginning with a one-off track that ended up yielding entire EPs worth of material. We try to take that same approach with Leon. For us, it was opening up our world to have another person in it. But all of it feels like Texas to me. To coincide with the announcement, Bridges and Khruangbin have shared the project title track, meditative, twangy song that blends the band's Thai-Funk proclivities with Bridges ' rootsy vocals. Caressing you from Fort Worth to Amarillo, sings Bridges, as he breezily meditates on his homestates ' natural wonders. Come on roll with me til the sun dips low. Whats next

Leon Bridges is a one-man Time machine. The singer, who dresses and sounds like it its 1967 in Memphisevokes, effortless authenticity of Sam Cook. On songs like his breakthrough single Coming Home, Bridges ' music transports listeners to the classic Stax / Volt era of soul, and more amazingly, does so without feeling utterly nostalgic. Khruangbin is a three-piece instrumental band that draws inspiration from cassettes of obscure 1960s-era funk from Thailand. Khruangbin is delightfully strange, and their curiosity results in something surprisingly listenable. In era of cookie-cutter pop, Khruangbin is a genuinely idiosyncratic pleasure. Other than the fact that Bridges and three members of Khruangbin have root in Texasthe two would seem to have nothing in common. After meeting while on US tour in 2018, Khruangbins bassist Laura Lee sent Song to Bridges. He sent it back the next day with a vocal idea and, from that spontaneous act, collaboration was born. The resulting EP, Texas Sun, will be released February 7 on Dead Oceans / Columbia / Night Time Stories Ltd. Texas Sun is the first time Khruangbin has worked with a vocalist. Their music together is ambient, psychedelic, soulful and rootsy. But as soon as Bridges lay his vocals on top of the band's instrumentals, something happens. Musical wanderlust driving Khruangbin settles down into the dusty warmth of Texas. Dimitri Ehrlich: Hi Leon, where are you right now? Leon Bridges: I am back home in Fort Worth, right now. Laura Lee: I think I feel like collaboration comes at a comfortable time for the US. Were finally ready for it, in a way. First, we need to put out some stuff just as US. You have to figure out who you are before you start to add other people. And I think being on the road and meeting other musicians and other people you bond with, you start to realize that you kinda want to see what else you can make. And with Leon, we had write songs that we didnt feel were for the US, but we wanted to use them for something. And there was one song in particular that we had written right before the tour we had with Leon that we thought would be really well-suit for him. So we give it to him on the road and then it kinda just take off. It happens a lot where you meet people and youre like, let do something, but nothing actually happen. And with Leon, I gave it to him and the next day he had write words to it. And that when you know its right, when it just happen. Each of the layers was designed for a different part of society. And the very top layer of the ziggurat was only for monks or spiritual leaders of people. And they had a private Stairway up to the top called Stairway to Heaven. And monks would go up there and they had these relics they would pray to and they would ask gods hard questions.

Colossal disappointment from talented performers

What do you get when you Cross two blues-orient Texas artists? One would expect a lot of blues songs about Texas, most likely. But in the case of Khruangbin and Leon Bridges, answer is lot less simple than it seem. It is important first to examine the relationship between two groups. On one hand, Bridges is a Grammy Award-winning songwriter and blues artist with Two Top 10 Records under his belt. His sound draws heavily from soul and R & B influences, with Texas attitude largely being confined to the background. For Khruangbin, attitude is much more in forefront. Instrumental trio use their roots as emotional force, but their music is much more global. They derive their sound from blues and psychedelia, but also share love of Eastern flavors, and their name is the Thai word for airplane. Two first Cross paths in 2018 when Bridges invited them on tour of his, and the result was chemistry strong enough to produce a four-track EP called Texas SUN. The EP opens with the title track, slow cowboy-psychedelic hybrid jam with blues lick flourishes and Bridges ' soulful crooning over lyrics about, You guess it, Texas. The Song names include Fort Worth and Amarillo and reference quintessential Heartland trope of narrator and his beloved going for Cross-state drive with wind in their hair as SUN go down. After that, come midnight, even slower jam about driving to seclude area and having sex under stars. If youre starting to notice lyrical pattern, dont worry, youre not alone. Theres little bit of musical switch in C-Side, as the backing band switches to Bossanova feel, but guess what, song is lyrically about sex with a beautiful woman from a club. Finally, conversion slips back into old formula, and its slowest jam yet. To no one's surprise, song is about sex, being so good that the narrator goes from being a bad person to seeing God and developing a moral compass. At the beginning of the EP, Bridges ' lyrical content was sexy and sensual, but after four progressively worse songs, it become him just bragging about getting laid. Its not fair to claim that Khruangbin and Bridges are equal partners in crime. Former actually does a pretty good job painting sonic tapestry. That eerie and engaging, that genuinely depicts the lay-back Texas vibe collaborators were aiming for. Guitars are chill out and drumming is simple and effective. Unfortunately, this all gets masked by the fact that bridge vocals are turned so far up in the mix that the focus is entirely on them. If this were an instrumental EP, it would be pretty good, but since it is not, all listener can hear is banal lyrics and cheesy melodies. Overall, EP is a disappointment, given how talented both artists are. Theyve created a fresh sound, but that sound turns stale really quickly.
