Leury Garcia of the White Sox is heading for surgery after severing his thumb ligament during Monday's game against the Tigers, per mlb. Coms Scott Merkin. He will be out until October at earliest. Danny Mendick will see the majority of time at second in the near-term while Nick Madrigal remains on the injured list. Ryan Goins can also fill in at second. Mendick, 26, has appeared in 13 games this season, slashing. 250 /. 318 /. 325 across 44 plate appearances. Former 22-Round draft selection put together strong audition reel last season in Triple-with Triple slash 279 /. 368 /. 444. Garcia, 29, holds a significant role in the early going for Southsiders. He started Year at second before sliding to short to cover for Tim Anderson's IL stint. Across 16 games, veteran Garcia answered the call with Triple slash 271 /. 317 /. 441. Injury is unfortunate for Garcia, who held line for the White Sox during their extensive rebuild, only to miss the rest of this season as they finally attempt to enter the playoff picture. The White Sox acquired Garcia from Rangers way back in 2013 after just sampling of playing time in bigs back. Garcia was the player to be named later in the mid-season trade for Alex Rios. Rios finished 2013 strong with Rangers, hitting. 280 /. 315 /. 457 the rest of the way. Dominican-born Garcia, meanwhile, has appeared in every season since the deal, earning a semi-regular role for the Pale Hose as a utility player over the last three seasons. He dived headfirst into 1B and appeared to either get stepped on or jam his hand into the base. The trainer came out to look at him. Stay in the game. Then proceeded to dive headfirst into 2B on a routine forceout to end the inning. It was comical if it wasnt infuriating to watch. Sliding instead of diving solves it. As do not leaving your feet altogether into 1B. As do finding new material for the base because this happens way too much. It looked like we were going to get a heavy dose of Danny Mendick over the next few weeks. Well, find out whether or not he is worth keeping for the next few years. Small sample size, but I like him so far, at least for super utility sub. I am not sure whether or not I would like him to start 2 or 3 weeks in a row. I guess I 'll find out in 2 or 3 weeks. So much for catching cards being rusty. It looks like the Sox were ones who were off last 2 weeks battling COVID-19. I suppose you take bad with good when youre in your transition Year. And thankfully, 2020 happens to be their transition year. And as bad as the Sox have looked at times this year, it is far better than what we saw in rebuild years.
This upcoming season, Chicago White Sox are in an interesting situation with Leury Garcia. The White Sox have a great group of young guys who can all be effective in their own way, but every player will not get an opportunity to have everyday role. Even though Garcia had a good season last year, hes facing some obstacles in his eighth year. The curious case of Leury Garcia entails competition for second base and where he will wind up if not second baseman. The right-hand veteran has solidified his label as a dependable utility man by playing six positions. Last season, Garcia played center-field position most, but with the highly anticipated arrival of Luis Robert, he is most likely to move somewhere else in the lineup. In 2019, his slash line was. 279 /. 310 /. 378 in 140 games. Garcias presence at the plate was not heavy with just 8 home runs and 40 RBIs, but he still finished with a solid on-base percentage. It is no secret that he isnt power hitter and he doesnt have to be. Lot of time Garcia shines defensively, which makes him a suitable candidate for second baseman. With that being say, there are players who are better offensively and that put everyday opportunity for him in jeopardy. Besides Robert, Nick Madrigal's call to show is very anticipated amongst White Sox fans. Madrigal is extremely talented and Garcias biggest threat to start at second base because Madrigal has tremendous plate vision. Last season, he struck out 139 times, which is something Madrigal cannot remotely relate to. Another downside to veterans game is his clutch ability. With runners in scoring position, his slash line was. 206 /. 214 /. 290. With those numbers, Garcia looks more temporary than a player with a steady role. Along with Madrigal, last year's call-up Danny Mendick will be looking to compete for a starting role on Opening Day. In his first 16 major league games, Mendick showed some true potential 787 OPS. Unless Madrigal can show he is ready for majors. Mendick could be a more seasoned option for the second base position. Therefore, Spring Training is going to be Garcias proving ground and he has to showcase all of his qualities, but hes going to have to shine while sharing the spotlight. In the end, it was not all bad for Garcia because he could just keep his current role. He could also work as a player to flip for organization. Garcia has been the kind of player that has not shown a lot of improvement, but he has not regressed either. He makes the case for good trade candidate because it is likely he will put up similar numbers or slightly improve. It is also important to note that hell will be free agent in 2021, which further possibility hell be move in the future.
