As anyone who's recently sat on the subway or airplane or at a ballpark can attest, prevailing trends in seating design don't exactly emphasize comfort. But famed Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas may just have found a solution. At the new home he designed for Second Stage Theater in New York, he took his client's suggestion and had seats covered with Levagel. That's Italian poly-whatsis material that functions, as its manufacturer say, 'like liquid and solid at same time' and stays just a bit cooler than whatever touches it. Normally used in wheelchairs and bicycle seats, Levagel is designed to provide superior posterior experience by custom-molding the body that's sitting on it. Unlike traditional plush-upholstered theater seats, Second Stage's looks plain, flat, almost sterile. Impression is reinforced when I reach out my finger and find Levagel cool to touch, halfway between firm and squishy and unmistakably synthetic-what I'd expect a cyborg's skin to feel like. But when I sit down, gel conforms to my contours surprisingly well. Instead of feeling like I'm in a chair, or on a chair, I feel somehow like I'm actually part of it. Slouching and proper posture are facilitated in equal measure. Cool material is subtly bracing-much better than the warm, sleep-inducing, sink-into-floor feeling that you get in most theater seats. All in all, it's impressive showing for Levagel. Maybe they could arrange to have it installed on subways.
