Recent history

British warships HMS Cyane, commanded by Captain Gordon Thomas, and HMS Levant, commanded by Captain Honorable George Douglass, fought USS Constitution with Captain Charles Stewart on February 20 1815 about 100 miles east of Madeira. War had actually finished before this action with ratification of the Treaty of Ghent by both sides, but combatants were not aware of this. After sighting the Constitution, two British captains resolve to fight rather than split up and try to escape. At first, they tried to delay the Battle until after nightfall, but the Constitution was approaching too rapidly and they formed in line, with Levant ahead of Cyane. Combine broadsides of two British ships were slightly heavier than the Constitution's, but almost exclusively from short-range carronades, and at the range at which action commence, Constitution's main deck battery of 24-pounder long guns has advantage against British vessels. The Battle begin, in evening with Constitution to windward, Levant and Cyane in her port quarter. After a broadside exchange for 15 minutes, Cyane attempts to cross the Constitution's stern and rake her. Stewart orders sails thrown aback, and Constitution instead rakes Cyane. As Levant tries to cross the Constitution's bows, Stewart orders sails to fill again, and rakes Levant from astern. As Levant drifts downwind with battered rigging, Constitution turns again to engage Cyane, At this point the ship surrender. Lieutenant Hoffman, second lieutenant of Constitution, took command of Cyane. Stewart set off to pursue Levant, and discovered British vessel beating back upwind to re-enter fight, unaware that Cyane had surrender. Two vessels exchange broadsides on opposite tacks. Captain Douglass then attempted to escape upwind, Levant was overtaken and surrender. Constitution and two prizes anchor in Porto Praya in Cape Verde Islands. Levant failed to escape when British squadron appear, and was recapture. Americans lose 6 men killed and 9 wound. Aboard Cyane, 12 men were killed and 26 wound, some of whom later died of their injuries. Aboard Levant, 7 men were killed and 16 wound.
