With State Senate overriding Gov. Charlie Baker's budget cuts, money earmarked for restoration of Boxborough landmark may be in the pipeline. State Sen. Karen Spilka, chairman of the Senate Ways and mean Committee, who represents the Middlesex and Norfolk District, said Baker's cuts eliminate 50 000 for restoration of Wetherbee / Steele Farm in Boxborough, which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Spilka says restoration is an important project in a State that takes its history seriously. 30-7 roll-call vote to override was passed on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Baker's cuts include 50 000, which was to fund restoration of a historic landmark. It was not only earmark cut proposed by the Governor. According to State Sen. Jamie Eldridge, D-Acton, governor's budget targets every single earmark that any legislator had secure. I was very happy to vote to override Governor Baker's veto, Eldridge say. He said the next challenge is to negotiate with the administration to release funds to Boxborough. Eldridge said he had secured 50 000 during last spring's senatorial budget. The town of Boxborough and Boxborough Historical Society want the building fixed up. The building, Eldirdge say, had been acquired by the town in 1994, and had since suffered water and roofing damage. Budget cuts in Baker's budget were initially driven by lower-than-expect revenues, Eldridge say, but how he was confident they had funding to move forward on some earmarks. We've been fiscally responsible, he say. And these projects really make a difference. When informed of veto override, Alan Rohwer, of Boxborough Historical District Commission, said he was hopeful the project could move forward. Eldridge said the vote was largely along party lines, with almost all Democrats voting for override and every Republican voting against. State House News Service contributed to this report.
