- Emperor of Mankind's inscription on Sarcophagus of Sagittarus Malacque, First Dreadnought of Adeptus Custodes no vengeance can be compared to vengeance of the dead.-Dreadnought saying-meme made by Noah Cogliette Space Marines are phenomenally tough, but there's limit even to their durability. Battle-brother may be so grievously wound that no amount of cybernetics and clone tissue can bring him back to fighting strength. In cases like these, Apothecary has two choices: grant his brother Emperor's Peace and extract his gene-seed, or have him instal in specialized life-support Sarcophagus and attach it to an array of weapons and mobility systems, turning him into Dreadnought. Advantages to becoming Dreadnought include the ability to support battle-brothers as Walking Siege engine, blasting vehicles and fortifications with heavy weapons and ripping open hard targets with hydraulic claws. Heavily-armored and no longer feeling pain, Dreadnought can wade into swarms of light infantry with near-impunity, smashing, stomping, and shooting until nothing's left but greasy stains. Life-support Systems in Sarcophagus allow Dreadnought's occupant to live nearly forever, as demonstrated by Bjorn Fell hand of Space Wolves, who has lived in such a state since the mid-31 Millennium. Therefore, Dreadnoughts tend to gather lifetimes of experience and are often called upon to share that experience with newer battle-brothers. Having Dreadnought on the field is both a force multiplier and a morale booster. All that power comes at a cost, of course. The near-dead battle-brother no longer has senses of his own, his eyes and ears wire to Sarcophagus's auspex arrays. He lives in a bath of cool fluid, numb and sleeping without dreaming, when his services as a warrior or historian are not needed. Should he be crippled on the battlefield, he can do nothing to save himself and must have faith in his brothers and the God Emperor that they will retrieve him. The act of just creating one is highly traumatic to interee and creates mental issues that living Marines are not affected by. The best way of regulating this is by spending most of their time in suspended animation or full blow stasis till they are needed. Tabletopwise,Dreadsare effective all-rounder and are fairly cheap to boot. They're good at any role they're tool for, whether it's for blowing up tanks with twin-link lascannons or melta guns or mowing down infantry with assault cannon or heavy flamer. They can also be formidable close combat units as they can be tool with power fists, for example. You could also deep-strike them in Drop Pods, ensuring hilarity when you get lucky and they end up where they precisely need to be. Sadly, with 8 edition Drop Pods can't carry Dreads anymore. However, out of production forgeworld Dreadnought Drop pod is still thing. The only ones that you can still find are pricy, or Chinese recasts.

Overview

BBF swinging through your neighborhood to talk about new dreadnaught recently released by Forgeworld-Leviathan! Hey everybody it your ever friendly BBF swinging through your neighborhood again! If you are into Space Marines and Heresy, then be sure to check out my Blog: Black Blow Flys Tactical Blog. There are also rules for fielding Leviathan in 40k armies for Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Space Marines and Space Wolves-note stats are the same. Leviathan is heavy support choice. I am going to focus on rules for 30k in this article. Here are rules for its wargear, special rules and dedicated transport options: 'm planning to kit mine with Grav-Flux Bombard, Siege Claw and armored ceramite. 'll swap out GFB for Storm Cannon for 40k. Siege Claw has inbuilt meltagun and its torso has two Heavy Flamers to thin down hordes, so it wo be getting tar pit any time soon. GFB is quite nasty and can easily deal with 2 + armor saves at range. If youve get 15 points to spare, the Phosphex discharger will help soften them up as well. Both GFB and PD are unique to 30k and have a maximum range of 18, so using dreadnaught drop pod to deploy them is a good investment if you select these blast weapons. I have discussed in-depth in Dreadnought 101 article strengths of Dreadnoughts and Leviathan is a truly heavy metal beast that can go toe to toe with Super Heavy Walkers, Monstrous Creatures and even Gargantuan Monstrous Creatures. This is mainly due to special rules for its Siege Claw Leviathan has assault grenades and + 1 initiative when it charge. It also inflict two S8 Hammer of Wrath attacks. As discussed in previous article, MC have serious problems when facing dreadnaught with front AV13 since their base strength is typically S6 and they must smash to inflict any Damage which is only one attack. Leviathan has 4 + invulnerable save as well plus four hull points so it can tank Damage. If youre mainly fighting SHW, then Siege Drill is your best option for melee since it has Armorbane special rule. It is not cheap points wise but as I often say, you get what you pay for and Leviathan is truly arsenal! I am planning to use dreadnaught drop pod to deploy mine and there is also an option for Kyhbardis assault Claw as well. My advice to Heresy gamers is to step into the Leviathan!

Notable Leviathan Dreadnoughts

Build in limited numbers during the latter days of Crusade, Leviathan was developed in secret on Terra without knowledge of Mechanicum. Its massive frame incorporates hybridise technologies, some dating back into the Dark Age of Technology. Resources to build these machines were nearly equal to that of Knight. Towering over later Imperial walker patterns, this heavily armoured Dreadnought is savagely powerful. Those few Leviathan Dreadnoughts which survive into the 41 Millennium are ancient and terrible relics, rarely speak of and rarely deploy, Dread as much as they are revered by those Chapters that possess them. Tormented and ravaged minds of those inter within are driven to the edge of madness by little-understood mechanisms unique to Leviathan, trapped in dreams of Heresy which haunt machines themselves, and soon suffer final dissolution owing to the terrible strain Leviathan inflicts on those who would dare to master it. Only the full authority of Chapter Master is sufficient to unleash these terrifying machines in War, as where they strike and what they kill is as often determined by their Dark dreaming as it is will of their commanders. Leviathan Siege Dreadnought bristle with weaponry, including two arm mounts that could be equipped with a combination of Leviathan Storm Cannon, Grav Flux Bombard, Cyclonic Melta Lance, Leviathan Siege Claw, and Leviathan Siege Drill, latter two of which would incorporate meltagun. Its torso was equipped with a pair of Heavy Flamers or twin-link Volkite Calivers. Additional weaponry could include up to three Hunter-Killer Missiles and / or Phosphex Bomb discharger. Finally, it would typically be armed with frag and smoke grenades, as well as spotlight. While Leviathan is extremely rare today, some machines still remain in service. The most notable is Carab Culln, Chapter Master of Red Scorpions. Chaos Space Marines still use Ancient Leviathan Dreadnoughts, which have since become Daemonically corrupted.

Starting with Leviathan Dreadnought, only downside to this thing is that its Relic keyworded unit. That means that you have to bring another Heavy Support option with it in the same detachment for it to be legal list. Other than that, for 300 points, you can get a disgusting killing machine. With 9 Editions blanket rules allowing vehicles to shoot while in combat and ignoring heavy rules on weapons, Leviathan gets slingshotted up into an even more potent unit option. Looking at Leviathan with two storm Cannons and Heavy Flamers, it does go up in point slightly but is definitely still worth value. The weakest part about Leviathan was that those storm Cannons are only 24 range. However, now that vehicles ignore heavy, you can add another 8 of movement to the unit and still hit on 2s. Plus, if you find yourself in combat, those storm Cannons arent consider Blast weapon. As one final cherry on top, you can also give it 2D6 auto hits with heavy flamers mount in chest. Overall, Leviathan is just a wrecking ball and can absorb a ton of hate with it being T8 14W with 2 + / 4 + Sv. Oh and tables are smaller now too, and these little CHONK love it.

2. The Telemon Dreadnought

Next, weve get Telemon Dreadnought for Custodes. This doesnt have the firepower that Leviathan has, but its toolbox unit for Custodes. Like Leviathan, its T8 with 14W and 2 + / 4 + Sv. It also got 6 + FNP, which is tight too. Where Telemon really shines, however, is the difference in words. The most common weapon that well probably see use is the Illiastus Accelerator Culverin. 5 shots at-3AP and 2 damage could wipe out small Intercessor squad with snap of finger. On that note, other hot weapon option looks to be single Caestus for some melee tank-popping. We actually saw list place 3 using this exact loadout in a tournament recently. Now, fact that anything can be put in reserves with CP in 9 Edition, this mechanic pair Great with Telemons charge Stratagem, Eternal Penitent. For 1CP, you can give Dreadnought extra attack reroll charge roll if needed. Its auto-use if you bring any Dreadnought for Custodes but even more so with 4-damage fist on Telemon. At the end of the day, you can have T8 wrecking ball pop Primaris squad with one weapon and open up the tank with 5 s16 4-damage punches.

History

Develop in highest secrecy not on Mars, but on Terra, Leviathan was an alternative development to the highly successful Contemptor Dreadnought. It represents hybrid technologies, some of which are believed to date back to the Age of Strife, which rumour had it were created by hand of the Emperor directly. The resources required to produce one were immense, equal perhaps even to the Imperial Knight. Make available to Legiones Astartes only in limited quantities before the outbreak of the Horus Heresy, they were highly valued and recognise as savagely powerful siege and hunter-killer units. They place onerous and ultimately lethal strain upon their occupants, Leviathan's incumbent burning brightly but briefly in their second life. Many in ancient Mechanicum were deeply uneasy over design, seeing it as purpose-design to match and indeed destroy Mechanicum's own Battle-Automata in some future, unforeseen crisis or dispute between them and the wider Imperium. During the Horus Heresy, Loyalists with access to Terra were able to obtain new Leviathan Dreadnoughts, although never many, while Traitors and isolated forces were reduced to marshalling their few Leviathans carefully or hunting down relics of dead from battlefields to be re-commission.
