MANISTEE MANISTEE High School graduate and US Naval doctor Lewis Haynes will be Honor on May 13 in MANISTEE. A 1930 graduate of MHS, Haynes served aboard USS Indianapolis, last American ship to be sink during World War II. The harrowing experience of that sinking was featured in the New York Times best-selling book, in Harms Way, written by acclaimed author Doug Stanton, and has been featured in various movies and on the History Channel. Stanton will serve as keynote speaker at 2 pm May 13 event in MANISTEE, that will be held at MANISTEE Veterans Memorial Park, located in downtown MANISTEE along the River / Channel. Haynes' daughter, Libby Ostrofsky of Massachusetts, will serve as special speaker. Haynes died on March 11 2001, just a few weeks before Stanton's book hit the shelf. Stanton had interviewed him, as well as other survivors of the sinking, to gather information for his celebrated book. Dr. Haynes' heroism is matched only by his humility, says Stanton. Through pure force of will, intelligence, and displaying an overwhelming sense of compassion for those around him, Dr. Haynes was continually faced with making enormously difficult situations at most difficult moments. His story, as with the story of USS Indianapolis itself, is inspiration to all. MHS Band and choir will both perform at a celebration that will unveil the fourth bronze plaque to be placed in the Park. Our students are Honor to be value for part of the ceremony and appreciate the service and sacrifice of our local service personnel, said Andy Huber, MANISTEE High School principal. Previous plaques placed in Park recognize USS Liberty, Little River Band of Ottawa Indian code talkers of WWII, and Medal of Honor recipient Duane Dewey of neighboring Irons, who served during the Korean War.
