pem mammography "pem mammography", by Joseph Frank, NIH Diagnostic Imaging. Prototype machine to perform mammography by Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan. Since this machine is used solely for mammography, it is called Positron Emission Mammography (PEM)....

Screening mammography is a specific type of breast imaging that uses low-dose x-rays to discover cancer early, before women experience symptoms, when it is most treatable. Digital mammography, called full-field digital mammography, is a mammography system in which the x-ray film is changed by electronics that convert x-rays into mammographic images of the breast. Breast tomosynthesis, called three-dimensional mammography and digital breast tomosynthesis, is an advanced type of breast imaging where several images of the breast from various angles are caught and reconstructed into a three-dimensional photo set. The radiation dosage for some breast tomosynthesis systems is slightly higher than the dosage used in standard mammography, it remains within the FDA-approved safe levels for radiation from mammograms. Large population research studies have shown that testing with breast tomosynthesis causes better breast cancer detection rates and less "call-backs," instances where women are called back from evaluating for added screening due to a possibly abnormal finding. Health care providers use mammograms to seek very early signs of breast cancer. There are 2 types of mammograms: screening mammograms and diagnostic mammograms. This is due to the fact that they can locate breast cancer early and therapy can begin earlier, perhaps before it has spread out. Not much is found out about breast cancer risk in transgender people. During a mammogram, a patient's breast is positioned on a level support plate and compressed with an identical plate called a paddle. The detector can be either a photo film plate, which catches the x-ray picture on film, or a solid-state detector, which transfers digital signals to a computer system to create a digital image. In a standard mammogram, both a leading and a side sight are taken of each breast, although additional sights may be taken if the physician is worried about a questionable area of the breast. If a mammogram shows several dubious areas that are not clear-cut for cancer, the radiologist might order extra mammogram sights, with or without added magnification or compression, or they might order a biopsy.
