Khaali Peeli

It is ironic that Maqbool Khan's Khaali Peeli, film designed for single-screen experience, is released on a pay-per-view or appointment viewing basis, thanks to the coronavirus outbreak. Of all films that have bypass release in cinema halls to premiere directly on digital or television platforms, Khaali Peeli certainly seems closest to live theatrical experience. A lot of this popcorn appeal stems from the larger theme of Khaali Peeli, ode to Bollywood of late '90s. References to Yash Chopra's 1998 musical Dil Toh Pagal Hai, Rajiv Rai's 1997 thriller Gupt, rajkumar Santoshi's 2001 period action film Gadar: Ek Prem Katha, and even Ramesh Sippy's 1975 classic Sholay, are pepper all over Khaali Peeli, but even makers know that their film is not patch on any of those. What Khaali Peeli benefits most from is its clarity and humility. The latter is not the quality one usually associates with Bollywood tentpoles, but the film exhibits that by showing restraint where it could have gone overboard. Only a few instances spill over into OTT mode, with most of the film humbly sticking to the potential of its derivative script. And few times it transcend its inherent scope to flirt with the idea of going big, its grammar makes it amply clear that amplification is more in awe than arrogance. The title Khaali Peeli translates to 'aimlessly' in Bambaiya slang. It sums up the mood of a film which behaves grand for no rhyme or reason, and slips back into its aukaat after wearing down. At the same time, film also plays up why it is vital to be a Hindi film hero not to save the world, but to splash colour on ordinary, deprived life. Coming to the hero, Vijay aka Blackie is a kaali-Peeli cab driver in Mumbai, who is on the run after committing the half-murder of a fellow taxiwallah. He encounters Pooja, who is also on the run after she escaped forced marriage to wealthy and uncompromising Choksi Seth. They try to outplay each other while evading cops and goons. If there was anything more filmy and outdone than this plot, it is the backstory of the protagonist. A kid separated from his father, Vijay, is taken under the wings of local gunda Yusuf. He started to sell movie tickets in black for a living, and is thus fondly called 'Blackie. ' preoccupation and indulgence in everything Bollywood govern not only decisions he takes later in life but also the tone and treatment of film. He meets Pooja outside Maratha Mandir, and they develop a bond till she is 'called dibs on' by Choksi Seth, who commission Yusuf to her to him once she turns 18. Yusuf thus forces Blackey to stay away from girl as apne dhandhe mei zabaan hi sab kuchh hoti Hai.

20. Bulbul

Bulbbul, latest Indian original from Netflix, is a disaster. In a smarter film, its title character, Mrs. Bulbbul Chaudhary, would have made a fascinating villain. For most of Bulbbul, she's adorned with the most exquisite sarees and jewellery. Whenever she's sitting idle, which is nearly always, as lady of house, Bulbbul fans herself with peacock feathers. And she makes no attempt to hide her true feelings, smiling ear-to-ear or heartily laughing at the predicament of others. Unfortunately, Bulbbul is stick in drab, inert, and ridiculous film, kind whose plot you can entirely predict after watching the first few minutes. It's only the film's characters, except for Bulbbul, who fail to see otherwise, to the point where it all feels like a giant prank, as if they are merely pretending to act oblivious. Nearly all of that is down to writer-director Anvita Dutt, lyricist and dialogue writer who made her directorial debut on Netflix original. Bulbbul period, supernatural tale set in Bengal, centres on the folklore of Chudail, woman who rises from the dead after an unnatural death. English subtitles translate it as demon-woman but her behaviour on Bulbbul is more akin to a vampire. Though Dutt erases misogynistic and patriarchal overtones of chudail to put a feminist spin on the story, she doesn't add to it in any meaningful manner. Moreover, Bulbbul's Bengal setting makes zero sense. Not a single character talks in anything but Hindi, and the film doesn't use the localised term For chudail. It may as well be set in any part of India. Though you wouldn't even know Bulbbul was set in British India by simply watching the film, since there's no trace of British, except for throwaway dialogue. Or three words of on-screen text at the very beginning, which state 1881, Bengal Presidency. The Netflix film opens with child marriage, as young Bulbbul is wed off to a much older man, Indranil Thakur. Bulbbul tries to throw viewers off by employing a happy background score and featuring a friend of her age in Satyajeet Thakur, but it does such a poor job that it serves as an early indicator of the film's predictability. Bulbbul is the only one convinced she was due to marry Satya. Fast forward two decades as Satya returns from London, where he's been studying to be a lawyer. In five years he's been go, Bulbbul has assumed her aforementioned status as lady of house. Her husband is nowhere to be see, her bumbling fool of a brother-in-law is dead, and his widow and her scheming sister-in-law Binodini have been forced to shave her head and out of the palatial house. The relationship between Bulbbul and Binodini is like a relic from the soap opera era, full of jealousy and pettiness. The film's story unfolds in two parallel timelines thereafter.
