The snappy series in Tolkein vein draws its heroes and villains from a somewhat tired set of fantasy tropes, but Longs storytelling ability makes it worthwhile. The story takes place in Middle Eartha€like realm populated by usual suspects of Tolkein-inspire fantasy world: humans, Dwarves, elves, orcs and goblins. Species are ally as they are in Lord of Rings: Dwarves and humans fight against orcs and goblins, while elves stand in shadows. The eighth installment in the Warhammer series, Orcslayer follows the continuing exploits of dwarf Gotrek and his human companion Felix. Gotrek is the Slayer, mighty dwarf warrior who, because of some past shame, is bind by oath to seek glorious death in battle. Felix, wittier fictional creation, is Gotreks epic-maker, poet charged with recording Gotreks adventures and, one posthumous day, setting them down in verse. Forces of Chaos are brewing in the North, and swarthy kamikaze Gotrek sets forth to seek his demise. However, he is side-tracked when local dwarfish royal enlist him to aid in retaking a stronghold now overrun by orcs. Gotrek, Felix and a band of fellow Dwarves with comically Nordic monikers rush into battle. But the sundry crew quickly realize that their orc foes are under control of a much more mysterious-and dangerous-enemy, fact that does not deter them from aggressively slashing their way across the countryside. Long relishes each pint of orc blood spill, and delights in describing every axe-blow, sword-thrust and arrow trajectory-and there are more than enough of each to go around. Despite the sometimes tiresome buildup of fantasy battles, narrative maintains momentum throughout. Product of a long-running alchemical experiment, twins Roger and Dodger struggle to understand their unique circumstances and gain control over them. In the late 19th century, ambitious young alchemist Asphodel Baker tried to rewrite reality to create a better world. She set in motion a long-range plan to incarnate the alchemical Doctrine of Ethos, encoding her scheme in a series of children's books destined to become classics. In present day, considerably more ruthless James Reed, who is her creation and her killer, breeds twins designed to each incarnate half of Doctrine; Once they have fully mature, united, and manifest as living forces that hold the universe together, he will seize their power to control everything. Failed experiments are terminate. Roger Middleton, brilliant with languages, develops a strange telepathic connection with Dodger Cheswich, math genius living across the country from him. Despite all of Reeds ' brutal and covert efforts to keep the pair apart so their abilities will flower fully, they cannot help re-encountering each other and then separating in the wake of tragedy. Their attempts to avoid becoming one of Reeds ' failures force them to draw upon their more arcane powers: Roger can persuade peopleand reality itselfto bend to his wishes, while Dodger can actually reverse time back to a certain fixed point.

Publication history

In late 6 and early 7 centuries DR, Dwarves were determinedly expanding into the Orcish kingdom of Vastar in lands later known as Vast, and attacking orcs. Working secretly with few humans and elves, they seek to develop steel toxic to orcs, and succeed with metal they call Orcslayer. Deep King Tuir Stonebeard requested over a thousand Orcslayer weapons and, working hard over several years, Master Smith Fyrfar Smokebeard forged them and High Old One Turbaern, aided by human mage Beldossan Short and elven sorceress Aleratha Ilnatar, enchanted them. Among these was the short sword Sarghathuld, forged in Year of Many Serpents, 605 DR. In Year of Spellfire, 610 DR, armed with their new Orcslayer blades, Dwarves surge out of mountains to slaughter orcs of Vastar, quickly toppling the kingdom and driving survivors into mountains. Sage Fairin Icemantle express great reservations about Orcslayer Metal, and write Treatise Against Blood-Metal to protest its use. He fears that it would lead to development of other alloys toxic to many races, and spread death and destruction. Fortunately, art of making Orcslayer metals was long lost by 1370 DR.

Plot Summary

Orcslayer pick up Gotrek and Felix's adventures after a seventeen-year time gap, during which they have venture out of the Old World through Araby, Ind and Cathay. Finally, returning towards 'civilized' lands with little to show for their time away, they arrive at Barak Varr on board a Bretonnian merchant ship, only to find Dwarf port blockaded by the Orc fleet. Force to run blockade when further Orc ships ambush them, Gotrek gets crew to catapult him onto the deck of an Orc ship equipped with cannons and sets off its powder store, causing an explosion which clears the path for the heroes to break through. Their hero's welcome is quickly sour, however, when they discover that the people of Barak Varr are besieged by land as well and that their cargo of spices is useless to defenders. While in Barak Varr, Gotrek is approached by a Dwarf named Hamnir Ranulfsson, former friend whom he now hat. Hamnir explains that his family hold, Karak Hirn, has fallen to the Orcs and he calls upon Gotrek to honour the Old oath by helping him retake it. Gotrek grudgingly agrees, and Felix is forced to follow along. Gotrek and Felix join small army Hamnir has gathered from Dwarf refugees crowding Barak Varr. Local garrison launch a diversionary attack on Orcs besieging the fort that protects the landward entrance to the port, while Hamnir's force sneak out side gate. Hamnir's force is spot and attack, but Gotrek kills Orc chieftain wielding an enchant cleaver and the remaining Orcs start fighting over weapon, allowing Hamnir's force to disengage. They march towards Karak Hirn. Arriving at a human fort near Karak Hirn where further Dwarfs have taken shelter from roving armies of Orcs, Hamnir and his advisors make plans to retake hold. Karak Hirn fell largely because most of its defenders, including Hamnir's father King Alrik Ranulfsson, are away in the north helping the Empire battle the Storm of Chaos, and Gotrek is eager to fulfill his oath to Hamnir so that he can go north to find his doom before the invasion is defeat. Using his knowledge of hold, Hamnir devises a plan wherein team of volunteers will gain entrance to the engineer's workshop via hidden door and open hold gates from inside before Orcs become aware of them, allowing Hamnir's army to enter and retake hold. A group of Dwarf volunteers assembles, and Gotrek and Felix join them. They march up mountain, scale cliff and slaughter Orc patrol which stumble across them, but upon gaining entrance to hold they find that the secret passage they plan to use has been rigged with new traps. Proceeding regardless, they are foiled when their volunteer engineer accidentally triggers a cunningly hidden final trap. Three of the Dwarfs are killed by falling rocks and the fourth is so badly wound that he forces others to leave him behind.
