Propylthiouracil, USP is one of the thiocarbamide substances. It is used prior to thyroid surgical treatment or contaminated iodine therapy in patients that have currently been treated with other medications that did not work well. Propylthiouracil is an antithyroid medicine. It works by making it harder for the body to use iodine to make thyroid hormone. It does not block the effects of thyroid hormone that was made by the body prior to its use was started. This medicine is readily available only with your doctor's prescription.
