Eagles, hawks, falcons, owls, and other raptors are top predators on the food cycle. In most varieties female raptors are bigger than the men, and therefore able to capture bigger victim. Twenty-three varieties of raptors have been determined at Pictured Rocks, including 9 types of owls, eight types of hawks and three types of falcons. Greatly feathery rough-legged hawks and snowy owls are periodic wintertime visitors, as are great grey and northern hawk owls. Some raptors such as broad-wing hawks are found in wood forests; others like the northern goshawk like mixed woodlands. Northern harriers may be seen soaring over dunes and open areas looking for prey. When they perch in tall trees on the cliffs or fly over water, eagles are particularly noticeable. Peregrine falcons nest on rock steps over Lake Superior where they have little disturbance from other types. Birds of prey are also great environmental measures. Park biologists have been studying raptors intensively for the past few years to gain stock data of populations throughout the lakeshore. The nationwide lakeshore is especially interested in exactly how the loss of beech trees, as a result of beech bark disease, will impact raptors. Keep Your Distance Raptors, like many birds, are easily disrupted by human invasion. Even your presence near the base of a tall tree suffices to interrupt birds nesting high up in the crown. Keep boats far back from bird nesting sites on the high cliffs. Regard any nesting closure areas assigned by park personnel. Cooper's Hawk Accipiter cooperii. Northern Goshawk Accipiter gentilis. Broad-winged Hawk Buteo platypterus.
