Rifampin is a semisynthetic antibiotic derivative of rifamycin SV. The 150 mg and 300 mg capsules also contain the following inactive components: colloidal silicon dioxide, corn starch, D&C Yellow # 10 light weight aluminum lake, docusate sodium, FD&C blue # 1, FD&C blue # 1 aluminum lake, FD&C blue #2 light weight aluminum lake, FD&C red # 40, FD&C red # 40 light weight aluminum lake, jelly, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, propylene glycol, shellac polish, sodium benzoate, black iron oxide, talc, and titanium dioxide. The 150 mg capsules also contain D&C yellow # 10, and D&C Red # 28. Rifampin may additionally be used to reduce certain microorganisms in your nose and throat that can cause meningitis or other infections. Rifampin can make hormone contraception less effective, including birth control tablets, injections, implants, skin patches, and vaginal rings. Tell your caregivers if you really feel any burning, pain, or swelling around the IV needle when rifampin is infused. It is also used by patients who have a meningitis bacteria in their nose or throat who do not reveal symptoms of the infection to avoid the spread of the microorganisms to other patients.
