Sirius was a tall, well-build, darkly handsome man with fair skin, medium, lustrous black hair, which sometimes appear light in the sun, striking grey eyes, and an air of casual elegance. This vestige of aristocratic beauty is apparently attributed to being passed down through the Black Family. When Harry entered into Snape's memory, he saw fifteen-year-old Sirius finishing his exams while being ogle by a girl who sit few rows behind him, due to his considerable good looks and casual yet elegant attitude. Unfortunately, Sirius' handsomeness-much like his imprisoned cousin, Bellatrix-suffer due to depression and maltreatment he undergone during the twelve years he spent in Azkaban. As a result, Sirius had prematurely aged beyond that of a man in his thirties. He had a gaunt, sunken face, waxy skin, yellow teeth, and long, mat hair. Harry thought he looked like a corpse. In November, after his escape, he visited Harry in the Common Room fireplace, and he was described as having short, clean hair and a fuller, younger face, though his physical appearance had yet to fully recover from his imprisonment. Unfortunately, by next spring, his condition deteriorate, and he reverted back to a state that was only slightly better than that which he had been in a year ago: unshaven, with a faint scent of stale drink around him, and he did not bother to change his clothes at night. He was also branded with a series of tattoos over his chest and arms. Death, however, served to restore him to the peak of his good looks and vitality. His spirit was described as tall and handsome, and younger by far than Harry had ever seen him in life. He lop with easy grace, his hands in his pockets and a grin on his face.

Most of members of the Noble and Most Ancient House of Black were advocates of Blood purity, and many were involved with the Dark Arts. The Black Family home at Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place, London, contains many artefacts of dubious origin and / or dangerous ability. The family motto is Toujours Pur, which is French for always / Still Pure, because the Black Family is one of few remaining completely Pure Blood lineages. Blacks intermarry with several other Pure-Blood families, including families of known Dark wizards such as Bulstrode, Crabbe, Flint, Lestrange, Malfoy, Rosier, and Yaxley, but also non-Dark families such as Crouch, Longbottom, Macmillan, Potter, Prewett, and Weasley. This was do to ensure that pure-bloods would last in years to come. That is why most Pure-Blood families are interrelate; because their ancestors marry other Pure-bloods. Last several generations of Blacks all trace their ancestry back to Phineas Nigellus Black and Ursula Flint. Blacks believe in Voldemort's idea of purifying the Wizarding race, but many, such as Sirius's parents, refrain from outwardly supporting him once they saw what he was willing to do for power. Sirius's brother, Regulus Black, was Death Eater, but later reconsidered after Voldemort tried to kill House elf Kreacher. Although there are several living Black Family members throughout the series, all are either female, female-line distaff Black descendants, or descendants of disowned Family members, and none of them has name of Black. The last known surviving bearer of the family name, Sirius, is murdered by his cousin Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix. Family Tree is described in the fifth book, but it came more directly to public attention in January 2006 when the author donated the version she had hand-drawn to the Book Aid International charity auction. Tree shows members of one of the oldest magical families, and their links by marriage to a number of other families whose members also appear in books. The tree described in the books extends back some seven hundred years, but the version drawn by Rowling only covers approximately one hundred fifty years. Exact details of Tree were kept secret during the charity auction by publishing only incomplete or partially blurred images of item for sale. However, number of people attending the auction made notes that were used to confirm details upon it, and a compilation of details was publish. This was later amended by further information from another copy of Tree incorporated into the film set for Order of Phoenix where Tree appears on display in Black Family House, Number Twelve, Grimmauld Place. Tree causes considerable stir amongst fans as it provides new information about elements of the plot of the series in between publication of volumes six and seven. It was eventually purchased for £30 000 on behalf of British actor Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter in the film series.

Etymology

Hermione: JK Rowling reportedly named her after the unlucky queen in Shakespeare's Winter's Tale, but I think the name is ultimately derived from the Greek god Hermes, originally messenger-god of thieves, marketplace, and all-around cleverness who becomes in the late classical period, patron god of alchemists, magicians, and magic. Ignatius: Percy's middle name is that of an early Church Father who wrote tracts on the structure of the Church, roles and duties of various members of clergy, and sacraments: in other words, busybody. His name sounds similar to Latin ignarus, ignorant, and ignavus, idle, lazy. Karkaroff: Perhaps from Gree s, jag, sharp, term used in names of several dinosaurs. It's also the name of the sort of giant Hellhound in Tolkien's Middle-earth mythology: Karkaroth, supposedly Elvish for red maw. Whichever etymology you choose, it's nasty name. Lily: Latin lilium. This fragrant flower in its many forms has been associated with innocence, womanly virtues, and / or virginity. In Greek times, the white lily was Hera's. In Christian symbolism, lily is associated with the Virgin Mary. The name evokes a powerful female symbol of grace with overtones of sacrifice. Lucius: From Latin lux, light, no doubt nod to Lucifer, lightbringer. Ludo: Bagman's first name is probably From ludus, Latin for game, as in spectator sport. Luna: Roman goddess of the moon, or, simply, Latin word for moon. Lupin: From Latin lupus, wolf. Maxime: French, From Latin maximus, largest. I'm puzzle; Maxime is usually a man's name in France, n'est-ce pas? Miranda: Latin name, wonderful, amazing, miraculous minerva: Latin for Athena, cerebral and formidable goddess of war, wisdom, shrewd intellect, tactics, weaving and crafts. She sometimes befriends Greek heroes and serves as a guide or protector. Mulciber: Another name for the Old Roman god of volcanoes and forge, Vulcan. Nagini: From Hindu mythology: naga is a supernatural, sentient snake. Narcissa: From Latin Narcissus, mythical youth who falls in love with his own reflection and wastes away. Nigellus: Diminutive form of Latin niger, Black. Nymphadora: Greek for gift of nymphs, I suppose, although I've never seen that name in classical Greek. The Nymphs were female river-spirits, minor goddesses. Olympe: Evidently From Mt. Olympus: she's pretty tall!

Notes

SIRIUS in MOVIES SIRIUS Black is played by Gary Oldman. Black Nigredo Sirius' last name led many Potter Pundits to speculate about the influence of literary alchemy in the Harry Potter Series. Literacy alchemy borrows themes from classical and medieval practices of alchemy which hold the primary goal of transforming mundane or vulgar materials, such as lead, into pure and ideal materials, such as gold, or creating philosopher's stone for everlasting life. Psychologist Carl Jung suggests that alchemy is a metaphor for the process of individuation or developing self, or personhood. As physical practice, metaphorical process, or literary device, alchemy involves three successive stages: Nigredo, albedo, and rubedo. Nigredo is blackening or decomposition whereby all ingredients are combined to form a uniform black matter, or shadow in the metaphorical sense. Albedo is whitening, illumination, or purification, turning dark to light and dividing subject of alchemical process into receptive elements. Rubedo is reddening that involves unification of purified elements into a new whole, of gold or of elixir of life in the case of philosopher's stone. In alchemical scholarship, rubedo stage has absorbed the original third stage called citrinitas reflecting dawning of the sun or awakening. In the alchemical scheme of books, SIRIUS Black is associated with Nigredo, through his names. Metaphorically, SIRIUS is associated with Nigredo stages in Harry's journey. William Sprauge and John Granger suggest that Book 5 in the Series reflects quintessential Nigredo, wherein subject has ' in the sense that his emotional stability degrades over the course of the plot, due to his mental connection to Voldemort and external pressures of escalating war. At the end of Book 5, Harry is blackened and reduced by grief of Sirius' death. Interestingly, discussants on Episode 23 of Mugglenet Academia podcast note that Book 3 can be considered to reverse Nigredo, in that it involves the introduction of SIRIUS and, rather than reduction, burgeoning of Harry's prime element, love, as he meets his godfather and recognizes another component of his family which still survive. Along these lines, first two books of the series can also be considered reverse rubedo and reverse albedo. Other characters with significant alchemical connections in the series include: Rube us Hagrid, Alb us Dumbledore, Voldemort, and Harry Potter himself.-Hufflepuffskein

About Him

So far, so noble. Unfortunately for Sirius, everything he planned was based on an assumption he really should have known better than to make: fact that Pettigrew was loyal. That, obviously, was wrong. From what we know of Marauders, Pettigrew was in awe of his clever friends. He needed James and Siriuss help to turn into Animagus and he didnt have their confidence-confidence that often spill into arrogance. Perhaps Sirius assumed Pettigrew held them in such high regard and never betray them. That doesnt mean he didnt suspect Pettigrew would reveal their secrets under threat of torture, but he probably hopped his bluff would prevent Voldemort paying him any attention in the first place. He definitely didnt expect Pettigrew to seek Voldemort out.

Biography

Sirius was the last remaining heir of the House of Black, once-notable pure-blood wizarding family. His parents, Orion and Walburga, were both Black by birth and second cousins. Sirius had a younger brother, Regulus, who died after turning against Lord Voldemort in 1979 by attempting to destroy his Horcruxes. He was killed by Inferi guarding one of his Horcruxes. Sirius does not share a close relationship with his brother, calling him a better son than himself. Sirius is a traditional Black family name, recurring in at least three generations and following the family tradition of naming children after stars, constellations, and galaxies. Names Cygnus, Arcturus, and Regulus have also occurred at least twice each. Notably, however, only one Sirius leaves the line of descent, which ends with the youngest Sirius. Black family believe strongly in pure-blood elitism. They refuse to consort with Muggles or Muggle-borns, Squibs and blood traitors and even disown Squib family members, such as Sirius' great-uncle Marius Black, and insist that their family members only marry within respectable pure-blood classes; because of these beliefs, they are forced to marry their own cousins. They also hold Dark Arts in reverence. Sirius rejected these values, leading to conflict with his family. He even put permanent-sticking charms on Gryffindor banners, as well as pictures of Muggle girls in bikinis, and motorcycles, and pictures of himself and his Gryffindor friends on the walls of his room to emphasise his differences from his family and annoy his parents. When his cousins Bellatrix and Narcissa make desirable pure-blood marriages, to Rodolphus Lestrange and Lucius Malfoy respectively, Sirius holds them in contempt. His favourite cousin, Andromeda, was disown by the family as a blood traitor when she married Ted Tonks, Muggle-born wizard. Sirius would later share this designation and was held in contempt, even hatred, by some members of his family. However, in his later life, Sirius establishes friendships with his first cousin once remove, Nymphadora Tonks, as well as his godson Harry, Harry's friends Hermione and Ron, and his distant cousins in the Weasley family. He was distantly related to Arthur.

Relationships

Sirius had a strong grudge and hatred against Barty Crouch Snr. This was mostly because Crouch sentenced him to life imprisonment in Azkaban without trial, denying him the opportunity to appeal his frame-up, and because of his disgust about Barty Crouch Jnr. However, his hatred of Crouch didn't stop Sirius from taking Crouch seriously, for when Harry told him about Crouch's ramblings and him vanishing afterwards, he instantly realise that Crouch was trying to warn Dumbledore and that the reason he vanished was because someone wanted to stop him from seeing Dumbledore. He was also knowledgeable of Crouch's tactics to catch Death Eaters and other enemies while he was Head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, including using Unforgivable Curses against them. Sirius states that despite his disdain towards him, Crouch's principles may have been right to start off with as they were fellow opponents against Voldemort at the time, although he also said that Crouch had become just as cruel and ruthless as the forces he was fighting against. Sirius also knew Crouch's demeanour well enough to be suspicious of Crouch's disappearance and rumours of Crouch's illness, knowing that Crouch would never miss a day of work for any simple reason, such as sickness. Even after Crouch's death, Sirius was still resentful of Crouch's decision to sentence him to Azkaban without trial, commenting that he was unsure if he would accept an apology from the Ministry of Magic even if they acknowledged Voldemort's return.

Behind the scenes

Sirius is portrayed by British actor Gary Oldman in film adaptations of Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban, Goblet of Fire, Order of Phoenix and Deathly Hallows: Part 2. Fifteen-year old Sirius in the film version of Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix is portrayed by James Walters. Young Sirius is portrayed by Rohan Gotobed in a flashback in Harry Potter and Deathly Hallows: Part 2 film. Like James Potter, Snape, Lupin and Pettigrew, Sirius is portrayed as being much older in the Harry Potter films. Gary Oldman was 46 when he first played Sirius in Prisoner of Azkaban and 53 when he last played him. Sirius dies at age 36. In the film adaptation of Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban, Filius Flitwick's office is replaced by Dark Tower as a temporary prison. Due to the much bigger fourth book compared to its predecessors, Sirius' role in the film adaptation of Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire is drastically cut. All of the scenes after his head appears in Fire are remove, and Molly Weasley does not meet him. Sirius and Snape only met on screen in Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban, directed by Alfonso Cuaron. Their two subsequent meetings in Harry Potter and Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix do not occur. However, they are both heard talking in meeting of Order in Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix. In film versions of the series, Sirius has many tattoos, but it is never state in the book if he has any. These are implied to be prison tattoos that he received while in Azkaban. In Harry Potter and Prisoner of Azkaban, it is notable that despite the fact that Snape and Lupin knew that Sirius was aware of the passageway to Shrieking Shack and, presumably, were convinced of his guilt, passageway was not blocked off or guard. In the film version of Harry Potter and Order of Phoenix, Snape's memory shows James disarming Snape, and Sirius remarks, nice one, jam! In Battle of Department of Mysteries, Sirius repeats this line when Harry disarms Lucius Malfoy, calling Harry James; slip of tongue that does not occur in the book, although it is consistent with comments made in the novel regarding him considering Harry younger version of James. Also, Harry's middle name is James. In Order of Phoenix film, when Sirius arrives with other members of Order, he punches Lucius Malfoy exclaiming, get away from my godson. This unknowingly caused destruction of the Prophecy Orb by causing Lucius Malfoy to drop it. Both actions are contrary to the book, in which Neville Longbottom breaks Orb and punch do not occur.
