Nantucket, not Woodstock, is the main attraction in Hilderbrands bittersweet nostalgia piece about the Summer Of 1969. As is typical with Hilderbrands fiction, several members of the family have their say. Here, that family is stitch together Foley-Levin clan, ruled over by the appropriately named matriarch, Exalta, aka Nonny, mother of Kate Levin. Exaltas Nantucket house, Alls Fair, also appropriately name, is the main setting. Kates ' three older children, Blair, 24, Kirby, 20, and Tiger, 19, are products of her first marriage, to Wilder Foley, War veteran, who shot himself. The second husband, David Levin, is the father of Jessie, who has just turned 13. Tiger has been draft and sent dispatches to Jessie from Vietnam. Kirby has been arrested twice while protesting the War in Boston. Blair is married and pregnant; her MIT astrophysicist husband, Angus, is depressive, controlling, and deceitfulthe unmelodramatic way Angus faults sneaks up on both Blair and the reader is only one example of Hilderbrands firm grasp on real life. Many plot elements are specific to the year. Kirby is further rebelling by forgoing Nantucket for rival island Marthas Vineyardand hotel job close to Chappaquiddick. Angus will be working at Mission Control for the Apollo 11 lunar landing. Kirby has difficult romantic encounters, first with her arresting officer, then with a black Harvard student whose mother has another reason, besides Kirby's whiteness, to distrust her. Pick, grandson of Exaltas caretaker, is planning to search for his hippie mother at Woodstock. Other complications seem very up-to-date: country club tennis coach is a predator and pedophile. Anti-Semitism lurks beneath clubs genteel veneer. Kates ' drinking has accelerated since the Tigers ' deployment overseas. Exaltas toughness is seemingly untempered by grandmotherly love. As always, Hilderbrands characters are utterly convincing and immediately draw us into their problems, from petty to grave. Sometimes, her densely packed tales seem to unravel toward end. This is not one of those times. Ten years after her teenage daughter went missing, mother begins a new relationship only to discover she can't truly move on until she answers lingering questions about the past. Laurel Macks ' life stops in many ways day her 15-year-old daughter, Ellie, leaves house to study at library and never return. She drifts away from her other two children, Hanna and Jake, and eventually she and her husband, Paul, divorce. Ten years later, Ellies remains and her backpack is find, though police are unable to determine reasons for her disappearance and death. After Ellies ' funeral, Laurel begins a relationship with Floyd, man she met in a cafe. She's disarmed by Floyd's charm, but when she meets his young daughter, Poppy, Laurel is startled by her resemblance to Ellie. As the novel progresses, Laurel becomes increasingly determined to learn what is happening to Ellie, especially after discovering an odd connection between Poppy's mother and her daughter even as her relationship with Floyd is becoming more serious.
