Black Hills, isolate eroded mountain region in Western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming, US, lying largely within Black Hills National Forest. The Hills lie between Cheyenne and Belle Fourche rivers and rise about 3 000 feet above the surrounding plains. They culminate in Black Elk Peak, highest point in South Dakota. Black Hills form as result of upwarping of ancient rock, after which removal of higher portions of mountain mass by stream erosion produce present-day topography. From distance round hilltops, well-Forest slopes, and deep valleys present a dark appearance, giving them their name. South Dakota: Black Hills Black Hills, South Dakota. S. At least portions of the region were also sacred to other Native American peoplesincluding, Cheyenne, Kiowa, and Arapaho and the area had also been inhabited by Crow. Rights to the region were guaranteed to Sioux and Arapaho by the Second Treaty of Fort Laramie in 1868. However, after the US military expedition under George. Custer discovers gold in Black Hills in 1874, thousands of white gold hunters and miners swarmed into the area the following year. Native American resistance to that influx led to the Black Hills War, high point of which was the Battle of Little Bighorn. Despite that Native American victory, US government was able to force Sioux to relinquish their Treaty rights to Black Hills in 1877, by which time Homestake Mine had become the largest gold Mine in the United States. Black Hills Winter Deals

One of our favorite drives in the Black Hills is Spearfish Canyon Scenic Byway. This drive takes you through one of the prettiest sections of the Black Hills. Plan on spending 30 minutes to an hour driving through, admiring the gorgeous terrain. Most of the attractions along the drive will be closed in winter, but it does not negate the beauty of drive. Relatively nearby is the famous town of Deadwood, which has plenty of casinos and hotels, etc. Open year-round as well as Terry Peak Ski Area. There are also plenty of winter sports opportunities in Black Hills National Forest nearby.

Where to Eat in Custer

Traveling back towards Central Hills, be sure to round out your Park tour with a trip through Custer State Park. Without doubt, this State Park is a South Dakota treasure. During winter months, youll have nearly 700 free-roaming bison, more than 50 miles of hiking trails and a variety of dazzling wildlife, almost all to yourself. If youre lucky, youll get stuck in a South Dakota traffic jam, better known as bison jam. These two-ton beasts often stick to roads in winter, in hopes of catching passing cars to lick off road salt stick to bumpers and wheel wells. It is a unique way to experience these animals, but we remind you to keep your windows rolled up and to stay in your car. Besides wildlife viewing, parks land is perfect for cross-country skiing, fat tire biking and snowshoeing. If weather permits, climb to the top of Black Elk Peak for a winter hiking challenge. As the highest Peak east of the Rockies, its best viewing point in the entire region is to see over the Black Hills. However you explore, towering granite, dense pine forest and rolling mountains are sure to awe. Once your day is do, be sure to check out some of the nearby wineries, breweries and amazing places to grab a bite in Keystone, Hill City, Custer and Hot Springs. There is some amazing local beer and wines to be had along with some great local game options like buffalo, Elk and pheasant.

Geology of the Black Hills

In general, oldest rocks in South Dakota were formed more than 2 billion years ago, during the Precambrian Period. They consist of granites and metamorphics found in the core of the Black Hills. In Black Hills of western South Dakota, great sheets of Granite intrude igneous and metamorphic rocks. This Harney Peak Granite provides a solid base for the carving of Mt. Rushmore. Many thousands of pegmatites were also formed during Precambrian time. In the southern Black Hills, these pegmatites contribute to the mining economy of the region with their crystals of feldspar, quartz, mica, beryl, and lithium minerals. Some have also been used for tin and tungsten. By the end of Precambrian, South Dakota had been deeply eroded and worn to nearly flat plain interrupted by low knobs of Granite and ridges of resistant quartzite. Top of Precambrian rocks in South Dakota slopes generally from east to west across all but the southwestern part of the state.
