Films of the 1950s

Marshall opened decade with Fancy Pants, reworking of Leo McCarey's Ruggles of Red Gap, with Hope as actor who pretends to be English valet and Lucille Ball as heiress in New Mexico who hires him. Less successful was Never Dull Moment, middling comedy about songwriter from Manhattan who moves to ranch in Wyoming after marrying rodeo cowboy. Faring little better was Millionaire for Christy, screwball romp in which engaged radio entertainer is pursued by secretary after he inherits fortune. Marshall returns to Westerns with Savage, which stars Charlton Heston as white settler who is raised by Native Americans and becomes tear between two cultures when war breaks out. Off Limits was another Hope comedy, with actor as trainer of boxer. In 1953, Marshall worked with Martin and Lewis on comedies Scar Stiff, remake of Ghost Breakers, and Money from Home, which was filmed in 3-D. That year, director also made biopic Houdini, which featured Tony Curtis as legendary escape artist. After Red Garters, musical Western with Rosemary and Guy Mitchell, Marshalls tenure at Paramount end. Now freelancing Again, Marshall helms action thriller Duel in Jungle, with Dana Andrews as insurance investigator who discovers that supposedly dead diamond broker is actually alive. Director Then Made Destry, Remake Of Destry Rides Again. Although it starred Audie Murphy, film was less successful than 1939 version. Sodden musical Second Greatest Sex inspired by Aristophanes Lysistrata. Marshall next makes Westerns centre on, variously, cavalry scout fighting Indians, army deserter teaching women how to fight Indians, and sheep rancher and cattle baron who love same woman. Imitation General was World War II comedy, and Mating Game was romantic comedy with Tony Randall as tax agent who falls for daughter of man he is investigating. Reynolds also appears in It starting with Kiss, playing showgirl who hastily marries army officer and then refuses to have sex for 30 days to test their relationship. Ford and Reynolds had better results with Gazebo, comic mystery about television writer who kills blackmailer and buries him in backyard; complications ensue, however, when body turns up elsewhere.
