Actor Todd Bridges, best known as Willis Jackson in different Strokes, struggled with drug addiction for years as it was his way to cope with his difficult childhood. Born in May 1965, Todd Bridges has been involved in the entertainment industry since he was just a kid. His first acting gig came in 1975 when he took a minor role on the TV show Barney Miller. After that, he kept landing acting gigs in shows like Police Story, Little House on Prairie, and Fish. Bridges' career skyrocketed in 1978, though, when he started working next to Gary Coleman, Conrad Bain, and Dana Plato in different Strokes. The show was highly successful, running for almost decade and making Bridges, Coleman, and Plato instant stars. Unfortunately, future of those three stars was quite negative, to say least. Coleman, who also worked for Good Times and Jeffersons, was involved in several legal and financial problems throughout his life. On May 28 2010, only one day after being admitted to hospital in Utah with a brain hemorrhage, he passed away. Plato, on the other hand, struggled with drug and alcohol problems for years. In 1984, due to her pregnancy, she was fired from different Strokes. On May 8 1999, she passed away due to accidental overdose. Out of three stars of different Strokes, Todd Bridges is the only one alive today, but he also go through several difficulties. When the show end, he felt like his life was over, and his fall from stardom began when he made headlines for being arrested and doing drugs. Bridges was so out of control that, in 1989, he was accused of attempted murder for shooting a drug dealer several times after a cocaine binge. Eventually, after spending only nine months behind bars, he was acquit. In 2013, Bridges was in an interview with Katie Couric to discuss some of his drug issues and how he managed to get sober. He revealed that negative ordeal began when he was about 20 years old and that it was his way to cover pain and suffering of what he saw in his family growing up. The actor confessed that one of his earliest recollections of his father was him hitting his mother and knocking her under the table. He was only five years old when that happen. To make matters worse, he was molested by his former publicist. When he told his parents about it, his dad took the side of the molester, something that destroyed Bridges because his father was supposed to protect him, but he didn't. Eventually, he found drugs thanks to Dana Plato, who introduced him to marijuana, and from that point on, he started doing everything from pot to cocaine, crack cocaine, and meth. It is important to point out that Todd Bridges doesn't blame Plato for introducing him to it because, as he said in the interview, he has to accept responsibility for his actions.

Bridges' son, Spencir Bridges, with his now ex-wife Dori Bridges, is also a former child actor who appeared in the film Daddy Day Camp and episode of iCarly. Bridges also has a daughter from a previous relationship. In 1998, Bridges and his brother James were credited with saving the life of Stella Kline, 51-year-old paraplegic woman. A woman nearly drowned when her wheelchair rolled into the lake while she was fishing. Kline said I was thanking God that he was there, and you know, everybody's been saying nothing but bad stuff about Todd Bridges in the news and in the papers. He has a heart of gold. Bridges remarked on rescue, We felt God put the US there at the right time to save this lady's life, because there was no one else around. In a 2010 appearance on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Bridges said that he was sexually abused at age 11 by a publicist who was also a family friend.
With the death of actress Charlotte Rae on Sunday, Todd Bridges is now the last surviving original member of the different Strokes cast. If you don't remember her role in the groundbreaking NBC sitcom, Rae plays Edna Garrett, housekeeper for the Drummond family, who adopts the sons of his African-American maid after her death. Midway through the second season of diff'rent Strokes, Mrs. Garrett gets a new job as housemother at Eastland School for Girls, boarding school attended by Kimberly Drummond and her character was spun off into Facts of Life. Yes, I'm Still Watching: Love TV? Talk about it over here Here's look back at each of the cast members: though all three child actors from different Strokes had problems after the show ended in 1986, Bridges' appeared to be most serious at time. Within three years, he was using and selling crack cocaine and methamphetamine, partly to numb himself from the memory of being molested by his former publicist. In 1989, 24-year-old Bridges was accused of shooting a drug dealer eight times, leading to two trials, first for attempted murder and second for assault with a firearm. In August 1990, he was acquitted of both crimes, thanks to attorney Johnnie Cohran, who would become famous for his work defending OJ Simpson. In his 2010 memoir Killing Willis, Bridges writes that when he was pulled over on his way from buying drugs in December 1992, he considered committing suicide by cop. I was worn out. Itd been a long time coming. Id been using and dealing on and off for six years, and even though Id been trying to get my act clean up, it clearly wasnt working, he write. I decide to give cops what I know they want, chance to say theyd take down Todd Bridges, former child star turn drug dealer, whether they get me with bullets or with bars. He was arrested again, but this time, judge, who happened to be a former addict himself, sent him to prison for 90 days-in hopes that stay would prompt him to make the decision to get clean once and for all. Bridges has now been sober for more than 25 years. In 2016, during an appearance on Dr. Oz Show, Bridges said he is no longer afraid to discuss his past and explained that he was no longer a man who once considered suicide by cop: I Love Life now. Life is the best thing in the world. After diff'rent Strokes was canceled, Bain, who plays Park Avenue patriarch Philip Drummond, appeared in the film Postcards From Edge. In 1996, he made his final TV appearance, reprising Drummond's role in another iconic Black sitcom, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. For Bridges, Bain's death in January 2013 was hardest of all: Conrad was more like my father than my real father, he told Dr. Oz in 2016.

Engineering With Nature Podcast, Season 1: Episode 10 VICKSBURG, Miss.-In this Episode of Engineering With Nature Podcast, guests are Dr. Brian Bledsoe, Director of University of Georgias Institute for Resilient Infrastructure Systems, and Dr. Todd Bridges, Senior Research Scientist for Environmental Science With US Army Corps of Engineers and National Lead of EWN Initiative and sponsor of this Podcast. They discussed a new partnership, Network for Engineering With Nature, to promote new practices and expertise and to foster drive and passion for delivering Nature-base solutions for Infrastructure in the next generation of scientists, Engineers, business leaders and decision-makers. IRIS and EWN have a lot in common. The IRIS vision is to unite conventional gray infrastructure with green or natural infrastructure to deliver a broader array of benefits continuously for people and society. In the past, infrastructure development was almost exclusively driven by engineering expertise. Progression underway in Infrastructure Development combines environmental and social expertise and practices with Engineering, providing a multidisciplinary approach to collaboration, outreach, communication and solution Development. IRIS has effectively bridged the divide between different disciplines Engineers, ecologists, social scientists, public health practitioners, landscape architects, lawyers and policy experts by, as Bledsoe say, being open and humble and coming together to find equitable and sustainable solutions to 21 century infrastructure problems. Reciprocal visits by individuals and groups from the University of Georgia and US Army Engineer Research and Development Center quickly established that the two organizations were on the same page and conditions were set for developing N-EWN, which launched on October 16. Research is needed to integrate engineering practice with natural systems, while also actively engaging practitioners and communities that are going to receive and benefit from future infrastructure. Infusing EWN principles and approaches into training and education will support professional development of practicing Engineers, for example, within USACE and the private sector, as well as the development of future Engineers, ecologists and social scientists, through new courses and curricula. As Bridges and Bledsoe discuss, current research activities within N-EWN fall into four areas: Developing rigorous Engineering methods, standards and guidelines for planning, design, construction, finance and engagement; Making a value case for EWN projects and natural Infrastructure that incorporate a broader set of benefits; Monitoring these projects thoroughly to improve understanding and consistency in how these Systems perform over Time; and Engaging With communities and working With people to develop policies that enable deployment of natural Infrastructure. When asked why this connection between academia and USACE is so critical now, Bridges was emphatic: Because we seek revolution. USACE began as an institution to support the revolution in the year 1775. That revolution was a different one, of course, but that was the start of USACE. Today in 2020, we are revolutionizing within USACE how we deliver civil works infrastructure, water infrastructure for the United States.
